Weekly Verse and Song for Tonight Weeks 531-539

Week 533
Isaiah 49:16
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.
God Knows Us
Have you ever had a day where things were going wrong and in that moment, you wondered where is God right at that moment? Well years ago when my mom left I felt so much pain and I wondered so much about where was God. In those moments it' was very difficult to not think in that manner. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Isaiah 46:16:
"See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me."
From doing some basic research on the above verse we see that that verse points to the hope for Jerusalem who were exiled in Babylon the walls are a reference to the broken-down walls of Jerusalem while the Jews were in exile.
It was a very difficult time for me when my mom passed. It was so confusing and I was in a lot of pain. As I reflect on this today I realize that no matter what God was right there with me. He comforted and guided me into seeking godly help through Grief Share a Christian ministry and through others. The Lord gave me a reflection of all that Mom had taught me and that the pain of this world would never affect my mom ever again.
This time also gave me a longing for Heaven. As Christians we must remember that this world is temporary it is not our permanent home.
Today if you are wondering where is God in the moments you are going through, remember the verse that you are "engraved" on His hands through Jesus Christ. God loved you so much that He died for your sins, that one day when you face a situation where you breathe your final breath you will be ushered into forever blessing with Jesus.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 534
1 Kings 8:17-19
17 “My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 19 Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’
When The Answer Is No
Over the years I have spent many times working on things in my career that have been challenging, and as I see those things I see that God placed me there for a reason. However, there was a time when I wanted to have a different career in law enforcement. I was sure that this was where God wanted me to be. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of 1 Kings 8:17-19:
17 “My father David had it in his heart to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 18 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 19 Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’
When I was younger I wanted to watch wrestling, every Saturday, my mom however did not want me to at all, and it was because my mom saw it as being violent. Every week we would ask Momf if we could watch it and my Mom would say "No. It was so harsh and upsetting to me as a kid, and I did not truly want to understand Mom's reason. I got to a point where I would feel very sad about it, to the point of tears. Mom truly had reasons.
Well David in tonight's verse knew that he wanted to build a temple for the Lord, and at first it seemed like this was the right way to go. However, God told Nathan that this was not for David to do (2 Samuel 7:1-17). God has His reasons as well (Isaiah 56:7) as David was a man of war not of peace.
In our lives as Christians w, we must remember that God covers us with His grace and mercy through Jesus. As Christians God is therefore sovereign over our, lives and we must know that God's reason is His, we may or may not ever know, but when the answer is No we must trust just as when the answer is Yes God knows far better. For me, I did not make it into law enforcement like I wanted to, but God has a different plan and a different career path that is fruitful for Him.
So our prayer should be though we may not understand why God's answer is No, that we have the humility to accept it.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 535
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When Others Overwhelm Us
I have a friend and for the past 4 weekends, I have been overwhelmed by this person. As a result, I have been exhausted tired, and frustrated, my peace seems to be gone. In tonight's verse, we come to a familiar verse we can turn to, to remind us of where we are to turn to, Philippians 4:6-7:
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
I will tell you I remember a time when I was a kid I saw my mom sitting on the couch holding mom's head back, eyes closed, and hand over mom's forehead. My mom seemed so overwhelmed. To this day I do not know what it was about, but I just remember that there was a Church service in the background playing on the Television. My mom seemed so overwhelmed. One of the things I noticed during this time was that Mom would pray often and seek the Lord.
For me it's what I need, to consciously do, reading a verse like the one from tonight empowers me to remember that when I am overwhelmed by someone and I feel so heavy that I can turn to the Lord for help. Letting His peace overwhelms me instead.
As Christians, when others have overwhelmed you turn to God's word and pray, w=seek Him, and His peace will overwhelm you.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord

Week 536
Colossians 2:7
7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
Staying Rooted
I read today in my devotional about a tree that looked as if it was standing on stilts after a series of bad weather. When one looked closely at the tree it was not standing on stilts but was standing on its roots. In other words, the roots were firmly planted into the ground despite large amounts of dirt being removed by the weather. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Colossians 2:7:
7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
When I was growing up we had a lot of "bad weather", with finances. My mom was a single parent, taking care of us kids and making sure we were well despite the finances. Mom made sure whatever it would take to ensure we were, fed and clothed, that we had shelter, and that we would study well in school. This was Mom's purpose. Through these struggles, Mom focused on God, and I will not say Mom was perfect, but my mom's roots like that tree were firmly planted in God's word.
This imagery of being firmly rooted in Christ does not mean we won't sway as even trees sway (the branches). However, a life that is rooted in Christ keeps us strong in our faith which brings about abundant thankfulness for the One we are planted in.
As Christians we live in a world where we can encounter things that may cause us to sway but being grounded in God's word will keep us from falling to these temptations. To do so practice regular Bible Readings daily and join a Bible Study Group were God's word is upheld.

Week 537
2 Corinthians 1:4
4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
Reflecting Christ
One of my friends came to me this morning and stated that she had started her day with some bad news. Her mom is not doing so well and needs a medical procedure done. Her mom is far away and not reachable physically. In tonight's verse, we come to 2 Corinthians 1:4:
4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
One of the simplest things my mom taught yet is so comforting and powerful is prayer. There was a time when I moved out of the house and onto another state, leaving my
job, friends, and mom behind. While there I had interviews set up and I was looking for work, it was a strange time for me. Well, I spoke with a friend and my mom who was back in my home state. My mom specifically worried told me that mom was praying for me. That alone stirred up a powerful sense of caring, that my mom though I was grown up would go to the Lord and pray for me.
As I listened to my friend this morning, I felt bad, but all I could think of was praying for her mom. I did so and let my friend know that I prayed for her mom.
Based on these verses, as Christians, we should always remember that for ourselves and others, to pray for one another. Comforting each other in a way that we know how. This may lead us to do other things like physically providing for someone or sending an encouraging text or phone call.
Trust the Lord as He leads and know that the Holy Spirit will be with you.

Week 538
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Being Patient
Love is a trait that doesn't always come naturally to me. It is something that should be blanketed to any and everyone and as I live in this world it is something I strive to give to everyone I meet regardless. As I understand it is important to see others as Christ sees them. One of the traits of love is being patient. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7:
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
These are the words to Paul and were for the Corinthian Church in Corinth.
When I was a kid I would sometimes cause trouble for my sisters. Mom would always be upset with me. As mom would tell me these things like being nice to them, mom was patient with me. Also, there was a time when mom's patient would run out. Last night I was extremely exhausted and my friend called me and wanted to talk, I did not have a lot of patience with her, and I kind of lost it a bit. I realized this morning after speaking with her that I could have been more patient and understanding, however, I wasn't as my patience ran out. I apologized to her for not being patient.
As Christians, it's important to exude the characteristics of God. The Lord tells us through His word that Love is patient. We are commanded to love others, and a trait of that is patience today let's work toward loving others by being patient. It is something I need to work on myself. I know it is God-honoring and that is the best way to live - Honoring God, after all, God is patient towards us.
2 Peter 3:9
9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 539
Psalm 37:8-9
8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.
HALT - Angry
One of my favorite pastors is Dr. Charles Stanley. He sadly passed on a little over a year ago, however, one of the things he spoke about was being careful how we proceed in our walk with Christ in times when we are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. These words form the acronym of HALT, and it should be something we do when we are feeling this way, that is tot stop. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Psalm 37:8-9:
8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;
do not fret—it leads only to evil.
9 For those who are evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.
Here tonight we take the second letter of the acronym as our focus. My mom would tell me at times to go to my room when I was getting upset about something or when I acted out of line as I was younger. Essentially my mom didn't want to continue with my current behavior and instead took a break to think through things before acting. Many parents employ this concept in their parenting.
The verse tonight takes this a step further as when Christians are about to become angry we are to refrain from it. The verse guides us to acknowledge anger but to refrain from it to turn from wrath and fretting as this leads to evil. We stop before we get to those levels. You see at times when we do get angry it can be because we are hurt by someone or something. However if we are to stop before, and check ourselves by reminding ourselves that our hope is in the Lord and that He knows all and can change a certain someone or something, it will help us amid a situation before we turn angry.
Not all anger is wrong, as Jesus too was angry (Mark 11), but it is the intent in our hearts that must be examined.
This is something we are called to do as Christians to refrain from anger. If you feel the welling up of anger remind yourself to stop and place that situation into the Lord's hands. I know it's something I need to do.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 540
Deuteronomy 31:6
6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
HALT - Lonely
Continuing on the acronym we spoke about last week HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired), which was taking the middle letter "A" we spoke about Angry. This acronym was from one of my favorite pastors Dr. Charles Stanley. Back in 2022, I hurt my leg and had to have surgery, after surgery I had some help but I was not medically cleared to drive, as I was on crutches for 6 weeks. During that time I experienced loneliness. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Deuteronomy 31:6:
"6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
When my mom was here, one of the thoughts I had was my mom and I made a good partnership. Mom would help me and I would do the same. When I hurt myself and had to have surgery and I could not walk or go anywhere sadness struck me I felt many emotions. I recall I simply wanted to get a cup of coffee, and I got on my crutches to get it and as I did I almost tripped and fell, but I caught myself with the surgically repaired leg and my other leg. I was so upset to the point of full-out "balling".
But I looked and thought that the Lord would get me through this. As the days progressed the Lord showed me through circumstances that made me feel self-sufficient that God was growing me with Him during this time. The Lord was showing me He was with me.
As Christians we all experience times of loneliness, even just yesterday I did. A firm foundation in understanding who the Lord is will carry us through these times. When we do we can remember that the Lord is with us, He will not leave and even when someone close to us leaves, we know that God is right where He has always been, which is right there! Trust Him!
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 541
Psalms 34:18
18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
HALT - Tired
Continuing on the acronym we spoke about last week HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired), which was taking the other middle letter "L" we spoke about Lonely. This acronym was from one of my favorite pastors Dr. Charles Stanley. This morning I woke up exhausted and I was asked to give a short presentation to a group of about 80 people online. I was not anxious about it or anything I just felt tired then I top of it I received an email from someone at work, that I had already explained why something was being done, and it bothered me that this person was asking again. In tonight's verse, we come to Psalms 34:8:
"The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
My mom would always tell me to take a rest, which was mom's way of saying to recharge yourself. This advice was always well understood but not always executed well by me, see I have always been the type of person who would just react, not wait for the right time. For example, if there was something that needed to be fixed I would not plan but jump right on it and try and get it done. This usually resulted in a mistake, and one where I would find myself thinking to myself "I should not have rushed into this so fast".
As I thought through the email I received, I realized how tired I was and I wrote a response then paused, and felt led not to react but to carefully plan my words. So I did. I felt the Spirit telling me to pause you are tired and to wait.
As Christians, we are most vulnerable when we are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. When we get this way we tend to open ourselves to an attack we need to heed the warning of the Spirit, especially in these moments. I'm learning to do this, and it's hard but I know it's the proper way to respond to His promptings.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.
