Week 489
Psalm 27:14
“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
Rest - God's Peace
As mentioned last week, we talked about Physical rest this week, we'll discuss another type of rest, which is God's Peace. Every day I feel I encounter something that if I let it get to me can take away my peace. The peace that comes from God. In tonight's verse, we come to Psalm 27:14:
“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
As I read this verse and have read this verse over the years, I believe it leads the believer to understand that sometimes we want something so bad that we can get aggravated over it, and even agonize over it, to the point where it becomes the sole focus that we may try fret over it. There was a time when I wanted a job, it was a job at a company that I liked, that I felt would fulfill me and get me where I thought I wanted to go. I thought it was the job that would let me take care of my mom. I took time off of my regular job and went to take a test for this job. Well, that job did not work out as I could not even pass the test. I felt disappointed that I didn't even tell my mom about it. Over the years I felt God move me in a different direction to gain the experience I needed to.
Years later God moved me to that company for a different job. Over the years when God moved me in another direction, it allowed me to gain the experience I needed to do something bigger and better than the job I was initially going for.
Waiting on God is not easy, it takes patience, but as you wait allow God to mold and shape you to where He wants you to be. Understand that God is in control and maybe for now the answer is no, but maybe in the future as God shapes you, the answer will be yes. Even if the answer is still no, that's OK. Know that God has a plan and will not leave you destitute, He is your Heavenly Father. Trust Him.
Love you Mom, and I love you, Lord.

Proverbs 24:10 ESV
If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small.
Big Strength
Adversity seems to always come and go but remaining strong in the face of that adversity comes from your relationship with God. Just today almost like a few minutes ago I received an email that seems adversarial. I tend to want to respond quickly to these things yet many lately I am learning to choose to stand on God's strength. In tonight's verse we come sot Proverbs 24:10:
"If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small."
I admire my mom a lot even more so that I encounter many different types of adversities in life as an adult it reminds me of how mom had to deal with many things raising us. Mom kept strong throughout many trials, relying on His "Big Strength". Even so today when I received that email my mind was to immediately respond and react, instead, I felt a tug to pull me away from that situation. To regroup and rethink when faced with some sort of adversity is important. We don't faint as we rely on our relationship with the Lord to pull us through situations.
Today when you are faced with adversity and you are fainting, or faltering, rely on God's strength to pull you through. In order to do so it is important to develop a personal relationship with the Lord to strengthen you.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Psalm 37:4
4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Delighting in God
This morning during the morning devotional I found myself reading Psalm 37 and subsequently I was nodding my head in agreement at what was to follow. The devotional spoke about God not being a "genie" for us. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Psalm 37:4:
"Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart."
I hear a lot of people misusing this verse, stating that if they want to get married or want something God will give them what they want. This kind of thinking places our God in a servant-like mode for us. This is far from the truth. One of the things my mom taught me was that I needed to always go to God, pray, and know that He hears me and watches me. When we pray and go to God in prayer, we align ourselves with Him.
By seeking God we are delighting ourselves in Him, and His ways, and His thoughts are aligned with our Lord. This is the point of passage, it's not God who doesn't see what we are going through, our struggles, our sufferings, our hardships, and even our "good ships", He does. However, the problems and non-problems should not be our focus. God should always be our focus, as we delight in our Lord.
This kind of approach to the Creator of the Universe shows that we know He is bigger than our _______ (fill in the blank). Because He is, our focus is God and our life aligns with what He desires for us, not vice versa.
If today you are struggling, place your emphasis, and your focus on Him. Seek the Lord through scriptures, through prayer and you'll see that when you delight in the Lord your heart aligns with His and your life is on track for what He wants for you.

Week 492
1 Samuel 30:8
"and David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.”
Guidance
When a problem arises I just want to solve it, to not dwell on it too long. For example, for a week I noticed that there were water spots on the floor next to the water heater but didn't pay a lot of attention to it. Well, last week I decided to investigate it and notice a small leak coming from the water heater. Now I am also the type of person who likes to try and solve problems myself. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of 1 Samuel 30:8:
"and David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.”
When we were growing up we didn't have a lot but my mom always made me feel like I had what I needed. At times when things broke down, for example, the furnace, the refrigerator, the washer, the dryer even the VCR, I would always feel a bit helpless but would try and do my best to fix the problems. I think this stays with me as last week when I noticed the leak I started to head to the hardware store to resolve the issue. Well, I just so happen to have a neighbor who lives next to me who is a plumber, I felt led by the Lord to go over and ask them for help.
In a few hours, the neighbor plumber came over but he did not have the tool to repair the pipe. So I took matters into my hand and called another plumber to come over and fix the issue, however, felt led to wait. I didn't listen. When the other plumber came over I again felt led to not him do any work. Well again I did not listen, and I ended up letting him do the work. This plumber did a terrible job and on top of that the pipe was still leaking, the sink got clogged, and the nozzle needed replacement as a result. The next day the neighbor plumber came over and repaired everything within about 10 minutes.
What I'm learning, is that I need to listen clearly to the Lord, when He says wait there is a reason, despite all human reasoning. In our lives, we need to learn to listen to the Lord and inquire of Him through prayer, much like David did in tonight's verse. Seek God's guidance in your life, ask, and most importantly listen and trust.

Colossians 3:23-24
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Doing Everything For The Lord
On occasion, I may catch an episode of UnderCover Boss. If you aren't familiar with the show it is a show where the CEO of a company goes "undercover" and disguises himself as an employee. The purpose it seems is for the CEO to discover issues in the organization and to make improvements. What I am always intrigued by however is the employees of the company not all but many of them are hard-working and motivated. In tonight's verse, we come to Colossians 3:23-24:
"23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."
This verse is not only about our occupations, but it is a lesson about life. When I was growing up my mom didn't have a "job". My mom's job was to raise us kids and grow us up. My mom did not take this lightly as mom made sure we learned about the Bible, we prayed, and trusted in God. On top of all that mom worked hard going to the store to get us food, balancing the little money we had, making sure we had birthday and Christmas gifts, washing clothes, etc. There is a lot more for me to list here. My mom showed us that work ethic was a godly ethic whether mom was paid in the traditional sense or not it was working hard for what was entrusted to mom which was us.
This has a trickle-down effect as it is something that I think about now. Working hard is important but in everything, it is for the Lord. I carry this through with my actual work, my exercise, my side work, chores, etc. Just like the employees of businesses as displayed on Undercover Boss, we should be hard-working and motivated as we "work" because we are serving our Lord.
As Christians, it is an important facet of our lives that everything we do is for the Lord, He is the One we honor and He has entrusted us.

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Temptation
Many times I feel a sense of being overwhelmed, this overwhelm pushed the boundaries of temptation, these temptations that come I know I can rest on one thing, God's word. In tonight's verse 1 Corinthians 10:13:
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
When I was younger many random things could be a temptation. For my mom, it was money I know my mom was always trying to earn money to take care of mom's family. One day my mom tells me out of a shopping trip where people told mom that they had money to divide with mom. They asked mom for mom's money mom gave it to them and this resulted in mom being handed an envelope. Well what was in the envelope was not money, but a bunch of blank sheets of paper.
Mom was tempted to know that money was what was needed for mom to take care of family.
A lesson to learn in life is that when temptations come we must seek God. God is the provider He a lone provides for our needs in whatever way He sees fit.

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.
Fruits of the Spirit
Last night a friend of mine told me how happy she was to know me. My friends went on about how she felt so happy that she met me when she did and that she feels great talking to me, and the patience I have. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Galatians 5:22-23:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things, there is no law.
Here we see Paul speaking to the people of Galatia, and letting them know the fruit of the Spirit of God. When I was younger I will always see my mom as someone who loved me and cared for me. Mom displayed a level of patience when I was younger. However, as I got older my mom had even more patience for me. I think this stemmed from Mom's growth with the Lord, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit who over time my mom knew more and bear the fruit of His.
My friend told me I had patience was nice to hear, but the truth is I did not always have a lot of patience, not a lot of the fruit of the Spirit. However, over time this became better and stronger in my life as I bore His fruit more in my life.
As Christians, we may not immediately bear the fruit of the Spirit, but through time, commitment, and prayer I think all Christians will bear these. If today you are struggling to show this, through prayer, commitment, and time ask the Lord to grow you.

Proverbs 19:20
20 Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.
Giving Advice and Taking Advice
This late morning I found myself having a conversation with a friend. I was giving her some career advice as we are in the same field. This spurred me to remember something that happened a few weeks ago at work. I was asked by a supervisor to be more authoritative and to speak the same.
In tonight's verse, we come to Proverbs 19:20:
20 Listen to advice and accept instruction,
that you may gain wisdom in the future.
When my mom was here, mom would at times give me advice, and when mom did not know what to do mom would suggest I speak with someone or mom would say honestly, "I really don't know". However, when I look back I believe my mom would be praying for me in every and all circumstances.
Reading and listening to others' advice is just as important as giving it. When the supervisor told me this seemed to give me ammunition and fuel to speak authoritatively. I knew that this would help me, now and in the future.
More importantly remember this, as we live as Christians in this life we must see everything the good, and the bad (perceived) coming from the Lord. He is in charge of our lives and assumes responsibility. So the advice you are giving and taking should spur your drive to do something different or better than what you are currently doing.

1 Kings 17:8-16
8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
God is the Provider
This early morning I woke up and felt a bit distraught over something I did a few months ago, It wasn't anything wrong, it was just about a decision I made. This decision, however, made me wonder why did God allow this to happen. My mind went back to thinking that God is showing me that He is my Provider, not me. Then I went over to read my daily devotion and the devotion reminded me that God is my source. In tonight's verse, we come to 1 Kings 17:8-16:
8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
I always think of my mom when writing these weekly articles. It reminds me that God through my mom showed me struggles in this life and decisions in this life, in fact, everything in this life points to God.
When reviewing "tonight's verse" I am reminded that God is my provider the woman at Zarephath trusted that God would provide for her and her son just as Elijah trusted that God would provide for Him through this woman.
In everyone's life, there may be times of doubting and uncertainty. When this happens remind yourself that no matter what God is your Provider. Additionally, before this happens remind yourself that God is there for you by daily reading scriptures, praying, and seeking Him in all areas of your life.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 496
