Weekly Verse and Song for Tonight Weeks 402-410

Week 402
Matthew 4:10-11
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
When Temptations Arise
As Christians, we are subject to the same issues of this world as everyone else. This includes temptations. This week in Bible Study we started reading through Matthew 4:1-11. If you are familiar with this passage, this is where Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Matthew 4:10-11:
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”
11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
One of the key points that caught me this week was that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, this is referring to the Holy Spirit. When I was growing up my mom always told us that God was watching us, God is with us, is one of the things I took that to mean as I grew older. This verse shows us how though Jesus was here on earth fully God and fully man, God was with Him. Jesus was led to the wilderness was tempted and overcame this by standing on God's Word.
As Christians we will face temptations of various kinds, the important thing is to realize with the temptation, God is with us, and will provide for us a way out. Our focus when we are tempted is to stand on God's Word. In other words to stay grounded in the truth that though God may allow you to be tempted, with that temptation He provides a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13). Glory to God!
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Matthew 25:13
Watch, therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
How to Live
Every day we all face obstacles and challenges that stretch and may cause us to have a level of exhaustion, worry, anxiety, etc. Being a Christian does not exclude us from these challenges. However, with that being true we as followers of Christ should not allow these circumstances to affect our walk with Christ. In tonight's verse, we come to Matthew 25:13, where we hear from the Lord"
"Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour."
I mentioned this a few times, and it makes sense to discuss it here, that is when I was growing up mom told us many things about God and made sure we had a foundation through Bible study and prayer times. Mom taught us to remember that we are accountable to God. This is a concept I carried with me as I live for Christ that no matter the obstacles or challenges I cannot compromise my faith in Christ.
Daily we all face these "issues" however we must remember that we must live in a way that pleases the Lord and that is not to compromise who we are in Christ. This is despite everything going on around us. Seeking the Lord daily through prayer, and through Bible study, knowing that we are accountable to Him, will decrease our chances of compromising our faith because through these processes we learn we love Him and desire to please and serve God.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 404
Philippians 4:19 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
God Meets Our Needs
Many times as a youth I spent moments trying to figure out the world as I am sure most do. Now looking back it almost seems like not so long ago that I was bored during summer vacation, unrested during holidays, and even confused during the first week of high school. However, as I look back at those times I can also look to the present and see how God provided for me and my family. In tonight's verse we come to Philippians 4:19:
"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus."
During those times as a young kid, I recall mom taking care of us providing clothes, food, and shelter. Mom was very protective of us, however, Mom also knew that protection would not last forever and that knowing the Lord is paramount. Though mom took care of us, what I realized was God through my mom is who took care of us and mom as well. We didn't have a lot but it never really seemed that way at least for me.
Today there may be many of us struggling in a world that seems conflicting. I want to encourage youth, in particular, to hold on to the Lord. Know that He will and is meeting your needs and providing for you, even though there may seem like there are times where you are alone know that God is with you and He is there for you. You may not see it now but someday you'll look back and see, He was always there.
I love you and I love you, Lord.
Home with the One who is always there.

Week 405
Luke 6:27
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
The Correct Response
Many times I find myself pushing myself to do well, even when I do push myself it seems others have a way to belittle my efforts.
In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Luke 6:27, here we see Jesus telling us how to respond:
“But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,"
When I was younger I always watched mom push mom's self to get things done. I recall when mom took a summer "job" working in a cafeteria in the neighborhood. The person who was in charge was not nice to mom, but mom's response was to keep going and to work hard. Mom saw the light at the end of the tunnel, mom did not fight back or insult back.
Jesus tells us as we live we will encounter people who hate us, but Christ told us our response must be to love those and to do good to them. When our response is aligned the way Christ wants us to we will:
1. Obey His command
2. We will not harbor hate towards the other person
3. We see the person(s) from God's perspective.
Following what Jesus said while we are in the middle of issues, allows us to honor Him. Honoring Christ despite all that is going around us must be the goal for every Christian.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Psalm 33:11
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,
the purposes of his heart through all generations.
God Never Changes
One of the things that struck me this morning during my devotional was that God never changes. Though for the longest I knew I think the reason that it struck me this morning was that I think of days that I feel worn out or tired when I feel frustrated or upset about something. The Lord, however, makes His plan and it does not change regardless of what we do or how we feel.
In tonight's verse we come to Psalm 33:11:
Psalm 33:11
11 But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,
the purposes of his heart through all generations.
When I was younger mom always encouraged me to seek God with questions I may have, many times I would see mom praying, standing up in Church to make prayer requests, and mom mentioning to me in my most difficult of times that mom was praying for me.
Thinking back to those times and about the verse for tonight reminds us that our God does not change. We can seek Him through His word and through prayer for the answers to our questions, when faced with a difficult task, the answer may be clear or may not. We just need to do our part again that is to seek God, to pray, and then to do what we feel led to regardless, God will give us the answer in one way or another.
We need to trust in God for He never changes and will direct our steps.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 407
James 1:2-3
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
Reasons For Trials
If we are honest though we are Christians we face trials that can bother us to our core. These trials can make us confused, restless, upset, etc. During these trials we may question, where is God? In tonight's verse we come to James 1:2-3:
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
My mom certainly had mom's fair share of trials. Trials through a hard marriage, money trials, food, and shelter trials, etc. I cannot say that mom faced these trials with joy early on, however, I can say that mom in mom's later years recognized the reason for the trials. Mom was stronger, in mom's faith. Even now I look back at the trials mom faced and I can relate in some ways. Seeing mom in the later years have a sense of peace, the past trials made mom stronger for the current ones, because mom faith increased.
This lesson teaches me that the reason for our trials is to draw us closer to God as He is the object of our faith. See that the trials coming from the Lord is the correct way to see the trials. Learning to lean on Christ knowing that He will carry us through as our faith increases bring us into a closer relationship with Him.
The reason for our trials is to increase our faith in Christ. Though the trials may be hard in the moment, in time you will face these trials with a stronger faith in Jesus. There is no better place to be!
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

1 Peter 3:15
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Speaking to Others
Recently I have been having a conversation with a friend. This friend has been telling me about a Christian conference she had been attending. When I asked more about this conference it became apparent that this was a conference that was promoting false themes and wrapping it up in Christianity. I started speaking to her and the conversation ended up getting to a point where she did not want to continue the conversation.
In tonight's verse we come to 1 Peter 3:15:
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
When I was growing up mom would take us to Church, where many times I honestly did not want to go. However, when we would go I for the most part was happy we went. Well, mom would also take us to Conferences at Church. These conferences were a bit odd and crowded from what I could remember. As I grew older I started to grow closer to Christ and I realized why these conferences felt crowded and odd. These conferences were "dressed up to be Christian" but they were far from it ever being truly Christian.
Having these experiences back then made me stronger today. I believe for my mom it wasn't really something my mom agreed with as mom got older regarding these conferences. So now because of my walk with the Lord today, I can see what these conferences really were, they are false movements to promote healing, wealth, being slain in the spirit, etc. Well as I was speaking to my friend I was able to try to show her Biblically how these conferences were not Christian at all. It's a hard thing to tell others that what they are doing or participating in is not good, or fruitful. My friend took a hard stance, even though I tried to be kind in my responses.
When we speak to others about Christ we must remember the words from 1 Peter 3:15. Even though others may not accept our words we must remember that ultimately it is God who will bring them into a saving grace-filled relationship with Him. This is my hope for my friend and for others who are seeking a relationship with Jesus.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

John 10:11–15
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father —and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Go-To Verses
This week during Bible study, I found myself breaking down reading the verse for tonight. As I did this I subsequently messaged a friend who I consider to be a mentor to me. I asked my friend if he had some verses that were his go-to verses. He replied with a large list.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of John 10:11-15:
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me- 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father —and I lay down my life for the sheep.
The image we see here is one of a caring and protective shepherd. When I was growing up for me my mom represented care and protection, however, what my mom did for me was eternal. Mom showed me, Jesus, through mom's actions and faith in Him. This carried over for me as an adult and I know that through mom's leading Jesus became ever real to me. Jesus is our Shepherd He is the one who displays ultimate care and protection for His sheep as the verse above states.
As Christians, we will always have good and bad days. I encourage all of you to find comfort in God's word, to have "go-to verses" that are interpreted correctly that will serve as truth for you in those days when things are not going so well.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 410
Proverbs 29:11 ESV
A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.
Quieting Your Tongue
Just yesterday I was on the phone with a manager. I was supremely exhausted, having been working for a year straight with no time off, I was supposed to be on vacation from the end of the month until the New Year. However, because of work, I could not actually be off. Well, the manager started to tell me how his vacation time is coming up and is looking forward to it, which was then followed by him asking me if I wanted to do more work while on "vacation".
In tonight's verse we come to Proverbs 29:11:
"A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back."
When I was growing up I remember an incident where mom was asking me to talk quietly and calmly about a situation I was in. Mom I believe was trying to teach me to be respectful no matter what was going on regardless of how I felt to remain composed. As of writing this, I am reminded of that dreadful situation but I do remember mom's words though at the time they were not received well by me.
The manager who spoke this way made me want to get upset and say something back. However, as he was speaking I put the phone on mute and tried not to show my frustrations.
In every aspect of our lives, God is trying to teach us something. A good practice to put into place when you are faced with a situation that may be dreadful or even one that isn't, is to think to yourself: "What is the Lord trying to teach me here?". Nothing is out of our Savior's path, He knows all things, letting the Holy Spirit guide us is paramount to the Christian life.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.
