Week 447
James 1:12
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
Persevere Under Trials
Imagine you are living your life and everything seems to be going along just fine, then things suddenly turn. Suddenly everything that was fun has become harsh and you are thrust into a world where there is a lot of turmoil and despair. In tonight's verse, the Lord teaches us how to respond during those unpleasant times, and this comes from the pages of James 1:12:
12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
When I was growing up, trials seemed always to be there my mom however faced those trials for us and protected us from many of those trials. Mom worked as hard as mom could for us, and through that taught us how to persevere knowing that the Lord is on our side.
For many of us, we don't have to imagine what I wrote above many of us have, and are experiencing those things now. Trusting in the Lord is the right thing to do in the middle of those storms. He tells us to preserve but not only that He is with us in those trials, (John 16:33).
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.
Home with Everlasting Peace.

Isaiah 41:10
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
When You Are Under Pressure
This week I received emails and phone calls about getting some things done in a hurry on top of everything else I need to do. The pressure was getting to me and in those moments I question am I trusting God. In tonight's verse we come to Isaiah 41:10:
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
When I was younger mom had a lot of pressure, to take care of us. This pressure was from a physical, and financial perspective. I know there were times mom questioned whether mom was trusting God.
Life and circumstances can get to us causing us to question whether we are trusting God in every aspect. I know when these emails and calls came in this week the pressure felt overwhelming and I became agitated and I was questioning if I was trusting God in every aspect. These situations when they do arise we as Christians should take a pause, pray, and remember that God upholds us, He will strengthen and help us.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
Peaceful Assurance
As I strive daily to walk closer to the Lord, I realize life does not get easier but my trust in Him does. During the past few months, I found myself in various situations, relationships, family, work, etc. However, as I walk this life I find myself releasing control, albeit slowly over circumstances and situations that in the past would keep me up all night. For example, I have a document to turn in and I have been waiting for feedback from the client, I have not heard back from them, and I am due to do a presentation to close out the project. I woke up this morning with my mind on that, then a peaceful assurance came over me and I felt things were going to be OK, this came from trusting the Lord more and more each day.
In tonight's verse we come to Proverbs 3:5:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;"
When I was growing up I knew at times mom was struggling with things, like family, finances, etc. However one of the things I can remember as I got older was that I saw mom have a level of peaceful assurance that things were and will be OK. This peaceful level of assurance was from the Lord. Mom lived mom's life following the Lord as best as mom was able to. As mom walked with the Lord as time went on I believe mom saw the struggle with family, finances, etc. not necessarily become easier but that mom had trust in Christ that if He brought mom this far He would not abandon mom.
The project is not closed out yet, but I trust that God will bring me through this and every other struggle in life. One of my favorite preachers Dr. Charles Stanley says: "Look back, Look up, and Look forward, to see what God has done, and will do". This is something all believers can do when life because overwhelming remember all that God has done, and will do for you, you will find your peaceful assurance.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Proverbs 3:6 "in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight."
Straight Paths
Well, it seems to happen again and again. As often as I try to avoid hurting someone, it seems inevitable that I will. This past weekend a friend came up for the weekend to spend time with her family. This friend asked that I visit but I honestly got busy and did not give my friend a solid answer. Subsequently, my friend got upset with me and now barely speaks with me. I was so confused by this that even after I explained myself and apologized she still is seemingly upset.
In tonight's verse we come to Proverbs 3:6:
"in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight."
This verse usually seen cited with Proverbs 3:5:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;"
When I was growing up my mom could be seen in a few places praying, I recall my mom praying by the china cabinet and also in a corner in mom's room. The thing I believed my mom knew was that mom must keep mom's trust in the Lord and no matter what goes on in life, it will be good according to God's plan.
This is the part that is so important for me and Christians to understand is that trusting in the Lord is our primary focus even when we are so confused and unsure why we are going through something. Whatever happens in life will be according to God's plan. I beat myself over and over in my head, saying "if I just went out there to see my friend", "if I may this choice instead of that choice", "my friend would still be speaking with me", etc. In these instances, we must be ever more vigilant to remember that we trust God and that whatever these obstacles are they will be worked out according to God's plan not ours.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Matthew 5:16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Letting The Light of Christ Shine
When I was in College I recall that I spent a lot of time studying and working as hard as I could. It was a struggle for me though, I had to work, work out, and still go to school. This was twenty-some years ago when I was in college. I recently met a person who is studying to ultimately get into medical school. I was speaking to this person today I see how this person is struggling and I offered to help. I was thinking about this after and I wondered why helping this person is naturally important to me. In tonight's verse we come to Matthew 5:16:
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
After I asked myself this question I realized it was the Lord shining through me to want to help. I am so for education, and though I have been out of it for a while I am reminded of how hard it can be. When I was growing up with my mom we lived in a neighborhood that was not the best, we could not afford things that maybe others had, but mom did mom's best and at the time I didn't even realize certain things. My solace was through education, I knew if I tried my hardest I could make a difference for myself and my mom. Now that I am in a different position, I recognize the similarities I may find in others who may now be struggling.
It is the Lord who placed this on my mind and heart and through this, the Lord is showing me that I have an interest in helping others in this area, I believe. As Christians the Lord may lay something on us to help others, it is a way of letting Jesus shine for others to see and know Him. What are the areas that the Lord places on your mind and heart to help others? If you recognize them examine those areas, help in those areas, and let the light of Christ shine so others may see and know Him.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

John 21:17-19
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
Why We Fail God
I know in my life I failed the Lord in many ways. I have a friend who I was upset with for almost two years so much so that I did not even speak with her. I should have forgiven her, but instead, I didn't. However in our failures, we as Christians should remember that though we fail God, there is a purpose, and that purpose is that God uses this to shape us for a life of serving Him.
In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of John 21:17-19
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
When I was growing up I know my mom always strived to ensure we were taken care of, but at times mom would too get into a position where forgiveness was not always there. I remember mom being upset with the people at the Church we attended, and as such mom did not speak with them as mom did not forgive them. Fast forward years later the friendship with most of those people was restored and mom had some nice times with them.
One of the things that are pointed out in the verses for tonight is that Peter failed God by denying Him (see John 18:15). But this failure prepared Peter for a life where he would serve God.
My friend and I recently became friends again and I feel sad that I lost two years with her that I would never get back. One of the things I can know is that all of us fail God. When we fail Him one of the things we can understand is that He will restore us and our failures are used by God to prepare us for our life of serving Him.

John 15:4
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
Remaining In The Vine Bible
For the past two days during my morning devotionals, I read about remaining in Jesus. It hit me when I was reading these verses and as I write this something that I have been struggling with becomes a bit more clear. Over the past week, I slowly started compromising my walk with the Lord. I began to think a little differently regarding certain things. The Lord taught me over the last week and reminded me to remain in Him
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of John 15:4:
Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
My mom always taught me to follow the Lord. So one of the things I started compromising on was a relationship. Even though throughout the time with this relationship I was reminded that yoking with an unbeliever was not something I should do (2 Corinthians 6:14). I finally prayed and asked the Lord to remove this person if this was not His will. That same day that relationship ended.
One of the things I am reminded of now is that as Christians we must exercise daily what the Lord teaches us through His word. Remaining in the vine, in Jesus is pertinent, and essential to remain a follower of Christ without compromise.
Love you mom, and I love you, Lord.

1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
All Religions
Recently I have been meeting people, through various means, online, in person, through friends, etc. One of the things I see is that there is a pattern amongst many of these people regarding "religion". Some say they are a Christian but when I ask them questions they mention they are not very "religious". Then I'll meet people who claim a different "religion" altogether. Yesterday I met someone who said that they believed in God, and I was encouraged for a second. When I asked so are you a Christian their response was no, but I believe all "religions" are the same, to respect all "religions", and not one "religion" is correct.
In tonight's verse we come to 1 Timothy 2:5:
"For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,"
When I was younger mom taught me about Jesus, I cannot recall a time when I did not know the Lord. As I grew older my knowing Him, grew more and more. The particular person I met asked me point blank did I believe that there is only one way. My answer was yes. However, I added that my faith in Jesus is not about a "religion" or something I was believing just because, I believe because as I grew older my relationship with Him grew.
This is the point I was trying to make, and that is Christianity is not a "religion" but a relationship with Jesus. I think there are many ideas around this, but here's the thing about this when we have a relationship with the Lord, He knows us personally and we know Him personally. Jesus stepped out and did for us what we could not do, He is the righteous judge, who though the Father declares us guilty, Jesus steps off His throne and takes the punishment we deserve.
No other "religion" has this. By this, we see our own depravity and need for Him, and we develop a relationship to know Him more as we place our trust in Him.

Proverbs 3:11-12
My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
When God Disciplines
Just a few days ago I encountered a situation, where someone came into my home, made a mess of things, and then left without putting things back in place. One of the things with me is that I have a lot to do, and not a lot of time to do it, which is pretty much like most people.
In tonight's verse we come to Proverbs 3:11-12:
My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
When I was younger my mom would discipline me and it was for my good, when I would do something wrong mom would want me to learn from it. Also however there would be times when things would happen and I was to learn from these things as well, as a matter of circumstances, for example being wise and not spending too much on things that are not necessarily needed. So not all correction was due because of a wrong action.
This week when this person came over to check on something they subsequently made a huge mess that is resulting in me taking action to get things fixed up. I could have initially gotten upset but, one of the things I try to think through is to see things from God's perspective. See the place that was left a mess has been an area I have been procrastinating on cleaning. When I look at the area now I see that God is disciplining me to take action and to stop procrastinating. This is how I am seeing God working on me.
Not all discipline is necessary a result of a wrong action however it can be related to something the Lord wants us to see and know. To get better, to improve ourselves. As Christians we must understand and see everything coming from God, this is a practice we can put into action by asking ourselves "What is the Lord showing me here?". In this case, it's discipline to correct inaction on my part.
