Weekly Verse and Song for Tonight Weeks 420-428

Week 420
Philippians 4:6-7
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Dealing With Frustration
This week has been really busy for me. I found myself in a situation where everything needs to work like "clockwork" this week. This morning I sat down to do my Bible Study (BSF) and my system was not working as I was watching the time I realized that I was going to be late. Frustration started to set in.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Philippians 4:6-7:
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
When I was growing up my mom would always teach me to pray, and to read my Bible. Mom would also share times with us, for nightly Bible studies and songs which we would sing. Mom doing this for us, was beneficial as it taught me as I was getting older to depend on God.
Being dependent on God involves seeing everything coming from Him, that is, it is being allowed by Him. By doing so when we get frustrated with things we realize that there is something here God wants us to know, see, understand, etc.. In all of that, we realize that we depend on Him for everything.
As Christians when we start to get frustrated about a situation, the best response is to pause and see everything coming from Him.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.
Home with the One we depend on.

Proverbs 15:3
3 The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
Keep Seeing Everything Coming From Him
Living as a Christian in the world we live in does not mean we won't forget what we learn from the Lord. Just this week I kept getting tempted to get upset with a certain situation at work. In such situations, we may forget that the Lord knows all and is there for us for myself I had to remind myself of this.
In tonight's verse from Proverbs 15:3 we are reminded that nothing is out of God's sight:
3 The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,
keeping watch on the wicked and the good.
When I look back as I was growing up I could see how my mom struggled with many things including finance and emotions. Living in "real-time" during those years honestly did not occur to me the struggles we faced, however, as I look back I am reminded how different things were. Mom tried mom's best depending on God and knowing that God has a plan.
Today I am reminded of this that no matter what we face He alone has a plan and reason. We are to always remind ourselves that we are to see everything coming from God especially during the unpleasant times, but also during the pleasant. As Christians, we are not precluded from the unpleasant events of life, but we serve God who will bring us through them as He always has a plan. Trust in God for that.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 422
1 Corinthians 10:31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Christ Honoring
This past few weeks I feel the Lord working on me, in a specific sense, and that is to ask myself is what I am doing, thinking, or how I am acting Christ-honoring. In tonight's verse we see Paul led by the Holy Spirit speak to the Church in Corinth about this very topic in 1 Corinthians 10:31:
"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."
I recall once when I was younger how my mom had a person in authority talk to me as to how I was acting. Though at the time I was not keen on this person speaking to me, I recall mom telling me to speak nicely. Effectively mom was teaching me to respect others especially those in positions of authority.
This is an attitude we as Christians must have that is we must think about how we speak (act) to others, and not only with that but how we may be thinking and doing. More importantly, we must ask ourselves is what we are doing, thinking and how we are acting honoring Christ. If the answer is no, we must pull back apologize for our part. By doing so we are honoring Christ in our hearts.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 423
Matthew 4:2-3
2 "After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."
When We Grow Weary
It was a few months ago that I woke up very early, I did everything I needed to do and got ready for a workout. Well, I stepped outside and I noticed something on the window frame. I got out a ladder though I was a bit tired and just wanted to workout and get back to other work I had to do that day. I leaned the ladder against the siding of the house when I did so it left markings on the siding, I attempted to clean the markings and it only made things worse as the paint seemed to be stripping.
In tonight's verse we come to Matthew 4:2-3:
2 "After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."
Here we see Jesus being tempted by Satan. In verse 3 you'll notice that Satan came to tempt Christ when He was hungry. This brings up a cautionary acronym HALT.
You may have heard that acronym before but it stands for: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. When I was getting older mom always wanted me to get enough rest, making sure I had enough energy for the day. Mom saw me going to work, studying, going to school, etc. Yet mom always wanted me to make sure that I got enough rest. Sometimes I would take naps and I would ask mom to wake me at a certain time, only to find out that mom didn't because mom wanted me to rest more. Mom essentially wanted to ensure I was my best and was alert. When we get Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired, we need to be careful, these may be the times that we are the most vulnerable to a Satanic attack just as Jesus was in the wilderness (Matthew 4).
Jesus responded to Satan: 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
It's important to think through this acronym HALT and to do what it states, stop do not make a decision until you hear clearly from the Lord. As Christians we must remember in brief moments we can make decisions that may have a longer-lasting impact so HALT.

Week 424
Hebrews 13:17
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Respecting Others
Many times I work with people who are in positions of leadership that wonder if they should even be there. Sometimes these people who are in these positions cause me to wonder "how did they get there?".
In tonight's verse we come to Hebrews 13:17:
"Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you."
Many times as a kid I recall how mom would teach us to honor the adults who are before us, by mom practicing those "honoring" attributes mom's self. For example, I recall mom had a friend who would help mom, mom would refer to her as Ms. Upton when speaking to us. Also, mom had another friend mom would refer to her as Grandma Ruth again when speaking to us. In a sense, mom was teaching us to honor those elders, leaders, or people in authority.
I will say that this teaching escapes me sometimes, as I tend to find myself working with people that cause me to question a person's leadership based on their actions. The Lord I feel has been working on me in this area, reminding me even now of what mom taught at the same time, regardless of how I may feel showing them respect for their positions.
As Christians, we should remember especially at times when we are ready to get upset at a person in a leadership role, Hebrews 13:17. When we take a pause, recall this verse, we are being wise in our actions and most importantly honoring Christ as He is who we represent.

Matthew 5:37
All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Do What You Say You Will Do
There have been times in the past and even now when I would say to someone "Yes I'll do that" only then to just put it off. There have also been times when I state to myself "Yes I will fix that" only then to also put it off.
In tonight's verse we come to Matthew 5:37, here we encounter the words of Christ as He speaks to the people in what is known as the Sermon on the Mount (a portion):
"All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ anything beyond this comes from the evil one."
There was one occasion when the ceiling fan stopped working at Mom's house. I told mom that I would fix it. I did some research then went out and bought a new one and my sister and I installed it. Then there was another occasion where I stated to myself that I would fix some things outside the house, needless to say, it is something that I procrastinated on.
As Christians we are followers of Christ, as such, we must follow what Christ states. When we make promises to others or to ourselves we should follow through. I do better at this, however, there are improvements that I need to make in Christ's name!

Week 426
Romans 12:12 ESV
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
Having Patience
I would say for me the last few months God has been teaching me about patience. Just when I think I learned my lesson about something that I should have patience over I fail at that. For example a few months ago I made a quick decision to try and fix something but ended up making this something into a bigger issue. Just today I was trying to fix something right before a meeting got started and ended up getting frustrated with it.
In tonight's verse we come to Romans 12:12:
"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer."
Over the last few years, before mom went home to be with Jesus, I notice mom displayed a level of patience with me, and with others that I didn't see mom had before. One of the things that I understood as I think back at those times is that mom was older and wiser in the Lord.
For me as I grow older through these experiences my aim is that I will learn more and more from the Lord and grow in patience. As Christians, I think that we need to put into practice Romans 12:12.

Matthew 27:54
54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
The Seriousness of Sin
This week in Bible study, we have been studying Jesus's crucifixion and death. In particular, a question came up regarding what happened after Jesus gave up His life on the cross. The question caused me to search for myself and discuss the seriousness of sin.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Matthew 27:54:
"When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
The centurion who was guarding Christ spoke these words. Prior to this, the sky was dark, the earth shook, and the dead arose. The centurion seeing and feeling these events must have thought that based on what he saw and felt that this person on the cross was not an ordinary man. He was who He said He was the Son of God, God Himself.
When I was growing up mom would punish me if I did something wrong, it was an offense to mom that I would for example disobey something mom wanted me to do or a rule mom had. As a result, I would get a deserved punishment. Much the same sin (disobedience) to God is an offense taken seriously by Him and is a crime. The punishment however is death separation from God for all eternity. Unlike the punishment that I deserved for disobeying mom, God takes the punishment. The best analogy of this is when I think of a judge handing down a punishment to someone for a crime. However, in this case, the judge gets off his throne removes his robe, and stands in the person's place to take the punishment. This person is you and I.
During this season of Easter, think of Jesus, what He did for us, taking our place for the crime we committed against Him. Keep this in the forefront of your mind and heart, and let yourself realize the seriousness of sin and the consequence that Jesus took.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 428
1 Corinthians 15:19-21
19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
Why Jesus is Our Hope
This week I have been studying why Jesus is our hope. As I was growing up I would read about a celebrity in the news who had just passed away. If I knew the celebrity well it would hit me hard. I recall when Lucille Ball passed away I found myself staring at her picture in a magazine snd I for some reason felt so fearful.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of 1 Corinthians 15:19-21:
19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man.
When I think back at those times when I felt so nervous about Ms. Ball's passing I think one reason I felt a level of fearfulness was because my mom really liked her show "I Love Lucy". I may have been equating her passing to something I knew I would one day experience with my mom, which increased my fear.
In the cited chapter we know as Christians though death will come to us, that because though He died Jesus was raised to new life, we who are in Christ need not fear this inevitability. We know that because as Christians we are His, we too will be raised to life again. Jesus is our hope we serve God who is alive, seated by His Heavenly Father, watches over us, fill us with the Holy Spirit and when death comes we need not fear for our hope is in Him, and death is a passing from this mortal life to the immortal life.
