Week 312
Luke 5:5
And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets."
I read this today from Dr. Charles Stanley: "Obeying God—even in the areas where we feel knowledgeable and skilled enough to handle matters ourselves—is essential to enjoying His rewards and extending them to others. What is Jesus asking of you?"
This quote spoke to me well mainly because we are called to follow God and listen to what He commands it seems very well at times though we may think we know better. In tonight's verse we see Peter, who at the time was known as Simon toiled all night for fish, yet Jesus asked him to let down his nets. At first Simon explains that he worked all night and got nothing essentially that he knew more than Christ. However, Jesus points to us and tells us to follow Him and to listen to what He says. When Simon listened he was able to gain more fish than the nets could even hold.
My mom always taught me things growing up, one of the things mom would always say is that mom was praying for me. In a sense mom was reminding me that I was to listen what God wants me to do.
It's an important lesson to learn. How can we today listen to God? There are many ways, one thing in particular is to first develop a relationship with Jesus by first giving your life to Him. Then your desires will be met by His desires as you learn the will of God for every aspect of your life.
Love you mom and I love you Lord.

Week 313
Matthew 25:40
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
In the past few weeks I've seen some interesting things with my friends, and that is they seem so distant. I consider myself to have two pretty close friends, ones that I could and would text on a daily basis, yet suddenly I would say since the first of the year they seem to have vanished or got quiet. In tonight's verse we see Jesus speaking to His disciples reminding them that whatever they do for the least they do it for Him. This verse is for us today as well.
I must admit having these two friends seemingly disappear has left me feeling a bit lonely and friendless, as I search through these feelings I came across several messages by Dr. Charles Stanley. One message in particular reminded me that Jesus is my best friend and the one who would never leave me no forsake me, that's an awesome promise. As I think back and remember mom, I recall my mom telling me that mom's friend who would come over and visit sometimes at the old house, was a good friend but now she has passed on. Later in life I would see mom sitting on one side of the couch every night as I would come back from work, I would just see mom sort of lonely. After some time had passed this loneliness turned into strength as I would see mom more bright and strong for the Lord. I never asked but as I think back at it, it reminds me today that mom broke that loneliness barrier as mom realized mom was not a lone but had Jesus. Mom's outlook also changed as mom seemed more enthusiastic, and more energetic as well.
I know more and more that this is the key, to remind myself that though people you think that might be there for you, may not, but to know as a follower of Jesus Christ, you will always have Him. Furthermore it may be that these friends of mine may be going through things, and that as tonight's verse points out we must consider others above ourselves as we consider that when we do, we do it for Jesus.

Week 314
2 Timothy 2:15
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
Have you ever feel like you just failed God? Perhaps it was a moment when you got angry and bitter about a situation, then after that situation was over you felt sort of ashamed. In tonight's verse we read here in the pages of 2 Timothy written by Paul to the young pastor Timothy, instructions. Paul tells Timothy to present himself to God as being approved, a worker for God who is not ashamed and handles God's word correctly. In everyone's life as a Christian we must remember that Jesus is our head, He is the one who we look to, He provides The Holy Spirit to us as a comforter and guide.
Though all this for the Christian is true, we are not perfect we still sin, but as Paul's instructions to Timothy were "Do your best..." . We must remember that even when we fail God, it is God's truth through His word and the power of The Holy Spirit that brings us back. After about 6 years I recall almost exactly the events of the day when my mom went home to be with Jesus. Mom's last words to me on the phone were "I love you too...". Thereafter there were hard weeks, I know I did not act favorably toward my Father in Heaven being confused and feeling lost. In a sense I failed God with my anger.
As time went by and after some "Christian group counselling" sessions though ashamed about my anger I was getting better. It was through God's word and the power of the Holy Spirit that I was getting better and I repented of my anger towards God. God forgives.
Today if you are someone who is struggling with being ashamed of something you have done, remember God, remember that as Christians we are not perfect, but we are commanded to present ourselves to God as one approved. This can be accomplished by reading God's word and by the power of The Holy Spirit, He will bring to remembrance all that we know about Jesus. (John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you).

Week 315
Romans 12:2
2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Just recently I had to give up my car of almost 13 years, it's the same car that mom rode in with me for the last time, it helped me move people, it helped me in many other ways. However, I didn't find myself too emotional or sentimental about it, I just knew I had to part ways with it. In tonight's verse we read what Paul wrote to the Christians believers specifically telling them not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by renewing your mind, by doing so you will know God's will.
Everything leaves nothing last forever, when my mom left this life I was very emotional. I started looking back and recalling what mom did for me in and all of us. I was hurting for a long time, but I started remembering this, "that this was the will of God", in other words this is not the place we are to be forever. Look at the things that we may enjoy such as a car, a boat, food etc. Nothing is here forever, things end, but what we must focus our hearts and eyes on are God, and His will.
Sure we may enjoy family, friends, and things that we have, but they cannot become your all in all, that is reserved for our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. It's important to remember that we must fix our eyes on things above not things here, for this world, it's people and possession will never last forever, but faith in Jesus Christ will.
As Christians we should enjoy what we have after all God has given them to you, but never let it become everything, for He is everything.

Week 316
Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
In the business world what I often hear is that "everything starts with a vision", and I think this is a great thing to carry in life, as Christian however, it is only half. In tonight's verse we read from the Proverbs to trust in the Lord with all our heart, do not lean on your own understanding, to acknowledge Him and He will guide us.
In everyday we set goals in one way or another, whether it is specific or without much thought, it is important as a follower of Jesus Christ that we make sure that whatever we do or intend to do are prayerfully brought before the Lord. I know that in the past I would think it's silly to ask of the Lord, "Is it your will for me to _____."(fill in the blank with whatever is, sleeping in late, starting a business, etc.). However the truth is no matter what in life we need to remember that Lord is in control. My mom I know was prayerful over many things I would see mom by the kitchen cabinet with Bible in hand and praying over a situation or perhaps a person. My mom would also remind me that mom is praying for me. With all that said it is important to remember nothing is "silly" to God our lives are important to Him, so much so that He would die for us.
As we continue to put Him first, things will be aligned, and it will be no doubt in your mind what the goal should be. Today when you are considering doing something prayerfully put God first, He will guide you on the path and give you the vision.

Week 317
Psalm 5:3 3 In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.
I was listening to a pod cast this about a former professional wrestler, who went through a lot of fame and suddenly found herself out of the wrestling business living in a studio apartment. Now there is nothing wrong with any of this, and I want to reiterate that there is nothing wrong with this, however it got me thinking about how we should prepare ourselves in life. In tonight's verse we see the psalmist exclaiming to the Lord in prayer.
The verse above reminds me in order to be prepared in life it begins with how we start our days. I remember growing up my mom would remind us to read our Bibles in the morning. I think mom knew that starting your day off with the Lord sets the day for us, thereby putting God first. Putting God first as we begin our days is so important, through it we develop our relationship with Him, we may hear from Him in ways we didn't know we would.
Preparing for life starts with putting God first. I am not proclaiming that by doing so nothing "uncomfortable" will happen. I am however proclaiming that doing so sets you on a path to developing a relationship with Him, and will make you better prepared when those "uncomfortable" circumstances do come knowing that you have that relationship with God. You'll always have God to turn to.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Week 318
Isaiah 26:4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal.
I read this devotional this morning that was titled "A Life of Peace", in it the writer spoke about trusting in the Lord, which comes about through having a relationship with Him, by praying through trials and triumphs, seeking His guidance, and testing His Word to see that it is true and practical for life. In tonight's verse we see Isaiah write that we are to TRUST in the LORD forever. Forever means, forever, and in order for us to have that trust we must first find that relationship with Him.
Back when I was younger I could say that when mom would have home Bible Studies and songs I did not always understand or even like doing them in the beginning. I wanted to do other things like watch cartoons, however, my mom was doing something unbeknownst to me. What mom was actually doing was letting us know that we could know the Lord more, through His word cultivate a relationship with Him, and Trust Him, in every area of our lives.
Today I know that I have that relationship with Jesus. I know this because as I go through trials and triumphs in life I do seek His guidance and I know through His Word I can see that it is true and practical for life. Each day as I live I find myself turning to God, and turning to His word for guidance. It is through the leading of the Holy Spirit that I make the best decisions possible, and I know salvation is alone through Christ. As Christians we should strive to seek a life of peace by knowing and trusting in God forever.

Week 319
Psalm 23:1-2 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.
A lot of times I know for me when I grow tired and feel weak, I push through certain obstacles to get things done, I think this is a great quality to have. However, there is a concept of rest, that the Bible speaks about, and though there many interpretations of how this is to be done, the one thing that is so true is that our rest is in Christ. In tonight's verse in the 23rd Psalm David wrote that the Lord is his shepherd, therefore he should lack nothing, God leads him to places of comfort and rest.
Growing up it was known to us that mom's favorite verse was Psalm 23. In fact mom had a plaque I believe of it, and when mom passed we made sure it was written on mom's cards. It's a Psalm that teaches us to rest in God, and even as I write this I need to consider what exactly this means. It means God is always present when we are going through things in our life, we need to understand that we do not go through them a lone it is God who is with us, we find our rest and peace in Him. However, it is not ONLY when we face things, that are obstacles, God is always present, leading us caring for us, and in the verse above leads us to a place of rest, because we rest or place our trust in Him.
As Christians the theme of our life is Jesus Christ, as we live, as we breath, we bless our rest our trust in Jesus forever. So as we go through life remember that Christ is with us whether we face obstacles or we don't our trust our rest is in Him.

Proverbs 27:17 17 As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
Recently I was talking to a friend about investments, and he mentioned that he is starting a new venture into real estate. My initial reaction was well that's interesting please tell me more, and as he did it became rather overwhelming. In tonight's verse we read from the book of Proverbs, where the write, writes that a person enhances or sharpen another.
See my friend is one who seems to bounce from one idea to another, starting one idea, pausing starting another idea, pausing and the pattern just repeats itself. Though my initial reaction and subsequent thoughts were "please tell me more" which resulted in me feeling overwhelmed I wanted to be kind and gentle in my approach waiting for him to ask for my opinion. I think this is a very important concept in sharpening each other, which we are called to do, however waiting for the opportune time, or when it presents itself is very important. I prayed that God would allow an opportunity for me to speak to my friend, and not just blurt something out. So when he asked me for my opinion I took that as the opportune time.
Growing up my mom would always tell us what to do. As adults I know it became hard for my mom to teach us things, or tell us what to do, after all we were all grown and wanted to be able to make our own choices. I think mom realized this however mom never stopped trying to teach us, but the manner and approach mom took was different. I think this was a result of mom's relationship with God, perhaps mom prayed for an opportune time to come up where mom would feel free to teach us.
This is an important concept to know as Christians though we are called to sharpen each other, for us to be willing to let the Lord provide the opportune time to do it. Our job would be to pray about things that concern our friends or loved ones and wait for the Lord. For as we sharpen others we too must know we are sharpen by God.
