Week 366
Philippians 4:7
"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
Continue to Listen To The Holy Spirit
It was more than a week ago now when I was asked to give a presentation. The presentation was remote and I was giving it over the internet on my computer to an audience of about a thousand. As I mentioned last week, at first I did not want to give the presentation, but then I had this gentle urging, that I knew was from the Holy Spirit. The question that comes up sometimes is this, "when I hear or have this urging from the Holy Spirit how do I know, it is from Him?". Well in tonight's verse we come to the pages of Philippians 4:7:
"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
After I accepted doing the presentation I reached out to a colleague of mine and after I explained I was doing a presentation I asked if I could use some of the slides he had. My colleague (who is in a leadership role) said sure, and said let me look over your presentation. The next day he called me and said he wanted me to fix a few things, to have another colleague review the presentation, and to do two mock presentations with him and the other colleague. I asked him why he was making such a big deal of this (not in those words though) and then he said this is a HUGE deal, if you mess this up you are done!
Growing up mom was always someone who wanted us to do our best. Mom would "make" us memorize Bible verses every Sunday, and we would go in front of the Church when the pastor asked would anyone like to share a verse. Mom I believe was training us, maybe not to be afraid of speaking in front of others, and to bring us closer to the Lord. Well this was a great thing as perhaps it is a reason why today I am not afraid of public speaking. However, when this colleague of mine said these things I began to wonder "why am I doing this?" "did I hear correctly from God?" and "am I really suppose to be doing this?". Well knowing that I wasn't afraid to speak did not play a factor it was, those questions that creeped up. Nevertheless, what ruled over me was this genuine peace.
The colleague of mine was wrong, this was not a "HIUGE" deal it was a simple presentation, and when I explained all this to him, he apologized.
Today when you have an urging from the Holy Spirit the way you can be sure is what the writer of Hebrews brought up, "...the peace of God...". Then when oppositions come you can rest knowing He will give you strength for the task at hand
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

James 1:19 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
Being Quick to Hear
This past Friday another slight incident occurred at work. The gentleman that I spoke of last who mistakenly told me "....if you mess this up you are done!" and I had another encounter. Long story short it turned into a hard conversation where he kept overtaking the conversation. I got to the point where I who would normally stop talking when someone tries to over talk me, I over talked him.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of James 1:19:
"Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;"
When I was growing up I remember an incident where mom told me to talk slowly. That actually made me more upset however, when I look back now I can understand what mom was telling me. Mom was perhaps speaking on this verse (though I don't know for sure).
We as Christians must remember the Holy Spirit and let Him guide us through every part of life. After the "hard" talk was over between me and this gentleman I ended up saying "sorry, I don't mean to come across in this manner". Later that night I was tempted to continue to get angry at the incident and even by the fact that I was the one who apologized though I didn't start any of this. However I felt the Lord's presence directing me to let go of this anger.
Fast forward to this week, I had a meeting with my manager who said, "I asked for an update on the project you are working with ________ (insert that gentleman's name), and he gave you a great review."
At all times the Holy Spirit guides us, we just need to listen, and follow.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Matthew 5:44
But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Praying For Others
It was about August of last year, and I was starting to work with a new group of people at work. I was very motivated to work, and learn. I was paired with someone who at first was nice and seemed like he was willing to "show me the ropes" so to speak. Well this turned sour pretty fast, and this person became hostile, albeit in a passive way. In tonight's verse we come to Matthew 5:44 here we see Jesus speaking saying:
"But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,"
A lot of us will encounter some sort of hostility that may propel us into a attitude of anger, and bitterness. Growing up my mom certainly encountered a lot of people who were hostile, in a sense to mom. However, one thing mom did was to remove mom's self from certain situations, seek peace and reconciliation at some point. In other words mom tried not to harbor any type of ill towards others.
Just this week that same person who back in August became passively hostile towards me was giving a presentation. I thought hard not to judge this person, though he was making some errors, that were called out during the presentation in front of the client. At the end of the presentation I started to think "well he deserved that", however I was struck with feelings to pray for him. The feeling of praying for this person felt like a releasing.
When Jesus instructed us to pray for those who persecute us, it was and is not only to aid the other person, it is also so that we can be released from harboring any type of ill towards others.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

John 15:18
"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
When You Are Persecuted
At times we as Christians can feel a sense of persecution. This persecution can be large or small depending on ones definition and outlook. However, the one thing we as Christians can do is holdfast to God's word. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of John 15:18, here we hear from Jesus:
"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first."
We grew up with my mom in what some may say is a rather poor and not so good intended neighborhood, more than this we were the only "Indian" descent family living there. At the same time mom took care of us, but the one thing mom didn't allow us to do was to go outside and play a lot. Mom in mom's own right was trying to protect us from others who would see us different. In fact many times I would feel out of place by the way I was looked at or treated. Growing up as mom taught us more about Jesus, I remember mom telling me that if others are "bad to you they are being bad to Jesus", this stuck with me. Just yesterday I was asked during Bible study "How can I find encouragement when others sin against you." I didn't struggle to find my answer, it was John 15:18. As I continue to recall some childhood experiences the reason for me feeling out place may have less to do with being the only "Indian" descent person in a certain area (school, neighborhood etc.) and have more to do with who I was becoming "a follower of Christ".
As Christians this is something we should all keep in mind. That as we live and breath we will come across people who may simply dislike us because internally and externally we reflect Christ. The world may not understand this, and may persecute us, but know that what is done to you, is actually being done to your Savior, He bares and bared it all for us.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Psalm 119:50
My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
How To Stand When Suffering Comes
In Bible study we are studying this week Genesis 39, which is about Joseph who was sold by his brothers and then taken into captivity in Egypt. Throughout Joseph's time in Egypt the Bible says God was kind to him, and showed him favor (Genesis 39:21). One of the questions this week cited tonight's verse from Psalm 119:50:
"My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life."
The question I was asked in Bible study was essentially my thoughts on this (and other) verses. What struck me about this verse is that the Psalmist writes that when he is suffering, it is not his belongings, family, friends, etc. that comforts him, it is God's promise.
When we were younger my mom took care of us as best mom could, not having a lot, mom made me feel like I had everything. Related to all this today I wonder how mom being single without anyone to help, drew strength. I could only look back and analyze that mom drew comfort from the Lord, as mom knew God's promises, for example "6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” "(Deuteronomy 31:6).
As Christians we must remember God's promises, no matter what type of suffering we may encounter. There are times our sufferings may not seem as important because others may be suffering a lot more. As this being the case we must remember our sufferings are our sufferings and they are important to us albeit for the time, with this said we must remember that God is with us in our sufferings, and to stand on His promises.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Week 371
1 Samuel 18:7-8
7 As they danced, they sang:
“Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands.”
Avoiding a Jealous Heart
8 Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?”
It can be easy to find yourself in a situation where someone's actions or inactions can make you upset, in those cases it might be this person(s) is doing something that is blatantly obviously wrong however, there may be times where someone is doing something that makes you upset but you don't understand really why. An insightful examination of your emotions however may reveal that you are actually envious or jealous. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of 1 Samuel 18:7-8 where we see Saul get rather upset, but if we examine his reasons it's because he is developing a jealous heart:
7 As they danced, they sang:
“Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands.”
8 Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?”
When we were younger my mom would have us go to Church every Sunday. The church however was far away enough that would require us to need transportation. My mom had people from Church come and pick us up and we would all go together.
The people at Church had nice cars and all, and I for one could see myself enjoying riding in their cars. My mom however could of develop a heart of being envious over them, however to my knowledge I could not ever tell a time where mom developed this type of heart. It is because mom had this attitude, I never felt jealous or envious over the people at Church. However, even as Christians we can develop a jealous heart if we are not careful. This week I found myself upset about what someone was posting on social media. This person was not posting anything wrong, however a careful examination of my emotion revealed I was becoming jealous over what this person had. This jealous heart was revealed to me during my time with the Lord this week. I prayed and asked God to forgive me now that I recognized why I was getting upset.
All of us can look at someone's car, house, work, family, and more and get upset for whatever reason, it is important however as Christians to recognize the reason we are upset. To be honest and to recognize it may be, that we have or are developing a heart of jealously is important. Seek God for guidance especially once you recognize it and ask for forgiveness.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Psalm 119:15
15 I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
Being Distracted
I would say this, in the past week or so my mind has been a bit distracted. I recently finished a contract teaching position and the very week after it finished I felt so distracted by not knowing where my concentration needs to be. In tonight's verse we come to the Psalm 119:15, the Psalmist writes:
15 I meditate on your precepts
and consider your ways.
One of the things that I always thought to myself was being focused, however focusing on the right things at the right times can be distracting. When we were growing up my mom would have us have Bible study in the home. Mom got a children's Bible from Church and we would sit around and mom would go through it with all of us at once. At the time I would say I enjoyed it partially, but as time went on and I think about it today mom was not only teaching us, but mom had us focus during the age we were at on God's word. This is something that never left me.
It's the focus of putting God first that sets the "rutter" of our lives. After being distracted, and feeling unfocused I felt a nudge from the Holy Spirit on shifting my focus to some studies at work that I had been neglecting. With this in mind my unfocused distractions started to come together as I became focused.
I think every one of us after a period of time can lose focus on "what do we do next". It's putting your focus first and always on God that will lead you into the direction you should go. Sometimes maybe what's next is a break, sometimes it's to start something you have been neglecting, whatever the case may be it's going to the Lord, and seeking direction that will lead you. This can be accomplished through prayer, through scripture readings, whatever the case keeping your focus on the Lord first and always will set us up from being distracted as you focus on His thoughts, His ways.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Psalm 57:2
"I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me."
Living With Purpose
As Christians we must live according to God's will, a lot of times questions come such as "how could I know God's will for me life?".
In tonight's verse we come to Psalm 57:2, where the Psalmist writes: "I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me."
Through my mom's life, mom taught me many things, however in silence mom taught me one big thing, and that is prayer. As a kid I would see mom standing at the china cabinet with Bible in hand and praying, I would see mom at a certain place in mom's room praying, and even as an adult I would notice mom praying before mom's morning coffee and bread. I may not have known what mom was praying about, as mom would pray silently, however I could see the importance of prayer.
Today I mimic this, daily I have a devotion, Bible reading time and prayer. See this is the way we can know God's will for our life daily seeking Him in prayer and through His word. It is an important part of being a follower of Christ. We all want to live with purpose, but as Christians we need to live with God's purpose for our lives.
Seek Him, daily through prayer and through His word. As you do this your life, including your thoughts and actions will be molded the way God has made your for.

Week 374
Numbers 22:26-28
26 Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left. 27 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry and beat it with his staff. 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”
What We Should Do When We Feel Frustrated
Just this week, I needed some landscape work done, it's important for me as I think it should be for all Christians to take care of what God has given us. Well on that same day my neighbor texted me and told me the chimney, cover was broken. I felt so frustrated by this, because I knew it was going to be a cost to repair and on top of the landscape work I was having done. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Numbers 22. Just a brief background Balaam was on a journey that was not the will of God, as he was on this journey, the donkey he had been riding stopped three times. Each time Balaam would strike the donkey to get her to keep moving. Well Balaam was taking his frustration out on the donkey, yet there was a reason the donkey kept stopping:

When I was younger I wanted a video game system, my mom thought it would be a good idea for me to get one, but because of the expense, mom said mom would save up the Summer and Christmas allowance that mom would normally give us. I was OK with this, because I really wanted this game system. When mom saved enough for me, we went to the store to get one, but it was all sold out. My gave the clerk our number and said when they came back in stock to call us needless to say I was frustrated. I waited months feeling frustrated and it was then we received a call from the clerk at the store that the game system was available.
In Number 22:32-33 The angel of the Lord told Balaam that I would have killed you because the reason for the journey was a sin. Balaam realized that though he was frustrated it was the Lord's purpose to stop him.
As I look back when I was a kid, and even the events of this past week, I realize something that we should all do as Christians when we feel frustrated, and that is we should ask and think of the Lord. We should ask and think what is the Lord trying to teach me here. Well as I look back as a kid, I believe the Lord was teaching me patience, and just this past week the Lord was teaching me something that I was fearful of, and that is "climbing on roofs". I went up on the roof for the first time to examine the chimney cover and to repair it. This is something I probably would never have done, but my thinking was perhaps the Lord is allowing me to be frustrated so that I could over come this fear.
We as Christians must always fix our eyes on the Lord and when we do we may come to realize in times of frustration, why the Lord is allowing something. It won't always be easy and it takes practice however remember this when you become frustrated, ask and think "What is the Lord trying to show me...".
Love you mom and I love you Lord.
