Week 375
Proverbs 19:20-21
Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise
Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
When Decisions Need to be Made
A lot of times as Christians we are faced with decisions that need to be made. How do we do make decisions? Sometimes we may seek family or friends, but a lot of times when we take this route we are basically asking what they would do. So how we make decisions as Christians is important for our lives. Scripture tells us that we should seek the Lord. In tonight's verse we come to Proverbs 19:20-21:
"Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise
Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails."
As a young adult, I remember I would talk to mom about some issue I was facing, and mom would always tell me two things to pray and to speak with a certain person mom thought would be able to offer me godly advice. I remember I met a young man that seemed to be having some issues and was homeless, I met this person on the campus of the college I attended. Well, I wasn't sure what to do I remember talking to mom who advised me to talk with our pastor.
When we face tough decisions the Bible instructs us to listen to advice and to accept discipline, then we will become wise. By doing this in your life you start developing a heart that will hear from the Lord as He guides us. What is important is to remember to listen to advice and accept discipline from those who are walking with the Lord, not just anyone, because it is a process of seeking godly wisdom.
Eventually because you are seeking godly wisdom, it is the Lord's purpose that will guide you. The truth is making decisions is tough especially the ones that may affect us greatly, however as we listen to wise counsel, know that it is the Lord who will guide you in your decisions as as the verse reads: "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails." So as we make decisions, seeking wise godly counsel know that your decisions will be guided by the Lord. The two things to do when faced with a decisions is to seek godly advice, this will open the doorway of your heart to hear clearly from the Lord, and to seek God through prayer and reading His word.
Love you mom and I love you Lord.

Genesis 50:20
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.
God Has A Purpose
I really enjoyed this year's BSF (Bible Study Fellowship). I try my very best to do BSF every year, if you aren't familiar with it, it's an international Bible Study that takes place from September until May of each year. The study takes you through the books of the Bible, with a focus on a topic or a particular book, this year the study was on Genesis. One of the readings that really caught my attention is Joseph's life. Joseph was sold to Egypt by his brothers and suffered all types of hardships. In tonight's verse we come to Genesis 50:20 where Joseph stated this to his brothers after he was reunited with them:
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."
Many times no matter what we as Christians will face obstacles and circumstances that will cause us to say or think about why is this happening. When we were younger, as mom was raising us, I could see that sometimes mom was in emotional pain over something. Though I may not always know what exactly mom was going through I could say without a doubt mom found mom's comfort with the Lord.
For all the things that happened to Joseph God had a purpose, as Joseph saw it he saw that God had a purpose that was to save the lives of the people from the seven-year famine. We however know that there was a bigger purpose eventually God brought His people out of Egypt to inherit the land that He promised them. If we look at this even closer we see that Joseph was a type and shadow of Jesus Christ.
My mom found mom's comfort with the Lord and God showed mom that one of mom's purposes was to raise mom's kids to the best of mom's abilities by His grace.
As Christians we can be assured of this no matter what we go through God has a purpose. When we go through something we should always think and know that God has a purpose, plan, and be rest assured that whatever you go through it is for your benefit and ultimately for God's glory.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Psalm 34:17
17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.
Feeling Down
I was talking to a friend of mine just this week and was expressing something that may not be the same for most people this time of year and that was that I feel down. It seems to happen every year around this time, the weather changes, taxes are due, and I tend to cram a lot in for the first nine months of the year just so that I could have a little bit of "reprieve" from October - December. Even though with all the busyness I seem to feel a bit down. The explanation I have is probably the changes. In tonight's verse, we come to Psalm 34:17, where David cries out to the Lord:
17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.
This is something that I need to remember when I feel down but not just this time of the year, every time and each time I feel down. Now my mom went through a lot and I'm not sure if depression is a genetic trait, but my mom, through all mom, went through was down. It wasn't until towards the end of mom's life that mom overcame this, as mom saught reprieve in the Lord and did what was necessary.
For myself, my "feelings of being down" comes from a lot of changes. I reminded myself to get quiet to continuously place my trust in God because it is not October - December that gives me my reprieve it's my trust and obedience in the Lord that does.
To be clear I am not stating that one should not seek professional help when they are feeling down, in fact, mom had to do it. What I am stating is to seek the Lord, seek wise counsel, place your trust in Him, and however, He leads you do it and follow it, to get your reprieve.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 378
1 Samuel 17:39-40
39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
Remembering The Way God Has Lead You
Many of us who are Christians have experienced God leading us, in a direction. For example, whether to take a job, to get into a relationship, purchases like a house or car, and/or in many other ways. The main thing we see in all of this is God leading us to do or not to do and with that comes results. In tonight's verse we come to 1 Samuel 17:39-40. A brief background the giant Philistine named Goliath came out to taunt and mock the Israelites, more importantly to mock God. David a shepherd boy comes to meet his brothers and witnesses this giant's words, and fully knowing to outright defend God he challenges Goliath. Before the challenge takes place he spoke to King Saul, and told him that he could defeat the giant, because in the past God has provided him strength to rescue his sheep from the mouths of lions and bears. David knew he didn't do so by the might of his, but by God's might. Saul agreed then to allow David to challenge Goliath but first put armor on him. David could not fully test the armor and so he took it off:

My mom always reminded me of something when I would go through something in life, and that was to pray. It could be with anything like a job, a relationship, etc. but mom always reminded me to pray. As I grew older and I faced challenges now I am reminded to pray because of my experiences. With that said, God has lead me through many things in life and continues to do so. Everyone of us who are followers of Christ should remember that God will lead you and how He leads you must trust. This could be a sudden circumstance or situation has come up and a decision needs to be made quickly, what we should always do is seek the Lord, trust and remember the way God leads us. One of my favorite pastors put it this way, "Look back, Look up and Look Forward" (Dr. Charles Stanley).
David knew he could defeat the lion not with the help of the armor but by the hand of God, as he looked back and remembered the strength God gave him to rescue his sheep.
When you find yourself in a predicament, remember especially then how the Lord has lead you, seek Him through prayer, through His word, through other godly men and women whom you trust, then ultimately make a decision trust God in this and move forward.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

Week 379
John 16:33
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Peace Is Not In The World
Many people find themselves in situations and circumstances that get them down. For example, you received a bad grade on a report card in school, you lost your job, your car broke down, etc. These things and more can get us down make us feel sad. However, if we in those moments pause and think about what we are going through specifically our feelings we may realize something profound. We may be seeking peace from those things, such as getting a good grade may equal a better job, losing your job may hurt your finances, your car breaking may mean you cannot easily get around. In tonight's verse we hear the words of Jesus as He addresses His disciples about the grief they will soon experience as Jesus will give His life for us, in John 16:33 we read:
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus was telling His disciples that their grief will turn to joy knowing that in Him is their peace.
See as Christians we must be careful about the world we live in, we may have things, or gain things but even those will never bring us peace. My mom I know would be down a lot in the middle part of mom's life because mom was raising four kids and was responsible for us without any help about our well-being, this included money issues, loneliness, etc. However, the biggest change I saw in mom was later in life, as I saw mom drawing closer and closer to Christ and these types of worries were not there as much, as mom saw the fruits of mom's labor through Christ.
Our peace should never and can never come from what we have, those things are fleeting and will always bring us down. Knowing, however, our source is from God and He is the provider, and placing our focus especially during the times we get down, will reinvigorate us as we are reminded that our peace is in Him, not in what we had or have.
I love you mom and I love you Lord.

2 Corinthians 12:9
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Not Letting Others Bring You Down
As a Christian I know we live by a different standard than a worldly standard, and that is a godly standard. With this comes opposition at times from friends, family, co-workers, etc. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of 2 Corinthians here we encounter Paul, who despite living for God, is "plagued" with a "Thorne in his flesh", he prayed for God to remove it, hear God's response, Paul's:
9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me."
My mom went through a lot in this life, and despite it all with highs and lows, mom stayed strong as best as mom could in the Lord. Just this week a manager told me your reputation is not good among your fellow employees. As I heard this I immediately wanted to fire back, however, my response was simple, I said: "despite all that I've done things will not change." I said this because I put in 40+ hours each week over the past year, gave up vacation time and worked, presented a project to 1,000+ people, and received multiple praises from colleagues. Despite all this "my reputation" does not change. Thinking through this at first I was brought down, feelings of anger crept in, however as I prayed I asked the Lord to allow me to keep calm and not get angry.
As I think through what matters to me, I honor God, despite circumstances and situations not changing, my center is Christ, and He is my all, and I give all to Him. We as Christians live differently from the world, some may see this and not understand us and even despise us because of Jesus. Regardless of your circumstances, the thing to remember is not to let others' attitudes bring us down, in those moments remember we stand for Christ, we live by godly standards and we honor Him in all we do. God is responsible for us and we need to honor and know we are ultimately accountable to Him.

Week 381
Ephesians 5:15-17
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
Using Our Time Carefully
One of the things I have come to grips with is time. It seems like a lot of the time I try to do a lot, but then I focus on one thing, when I do focus a lot of other important things like relationships, other studies, etc. fall to the wayside. In tonight's verse we encounter Paul speaking to the saints at Ephesus stating this in Ephesians 5:15-17:
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
When I look back at life when I was a kid I could easily see now what I couldn't then with regards to my mom. Mom knew that time was important so mom made the most use of mom's time, I recall mom putting God first through praying before having coffee, mom teaching us as kids to learn the Bible by having Bible Study at home, and a lot more. Mom was effectively using time wisely.
What I learn even more now from experiences mom showed is to always put God first in my life. By doing so I am understanding the will of the Lord. I recently feel lead to focus on things that I need to do by doing a little of the things every day. For example Bible Study, learning a language, learning a subject, etc. By doing so I know I am learning the most that I can with the time I have. Now this may not be true for everyone, that is doing a little something each day, it may be to do a lot of something each day, however, the primary should never change and that is to put God first and allow Him to lead you.
As Christians when we have a lot to do we first must always remember that God comes first place and by doing so He will lead us.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 382
Psalm 27:14
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
Waiting On God's Timing
Growing up I remember having all these ideas of what I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a firefighter, I wanted to be a lawyer, I also got into video games and so I wanted to develop video games, I wanted to be a bodybuilder, I wanted to be a scientist, I wanted to learn computers, etc. As you can see I had a lot of ideas of what I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. In tonight's verse we come to Psalm 27 specifically, Psalm 27:14 where David in his despair and feeling lonely wrote:
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong and take heart
and wait for the Lord.
David encouraged himself in the Lord by knowing who He is. When growing up with all these ideas, it's hard to remain focused, and as an adult even having some of these ideas one of the things I learned was to let the Lord guide me and not to just do whatever it is that I like, effectively waiting on God's timing. I know my mom would see us and work extremely hard to provide for us, but mom did not know where I would "end up", mom knew that if mom worked hard that will give me the ammunition by God's grace to accomplish things. Mom knew as well that God would guide me and guard me and lead me to where I am supposed to be, what I am supposed to do, this comes with learning to trust God.
Today many of us as Christians have ideas of what we want to be, or what we want to do, this can be overwhelming. However, waiting on the Lord, meaning to trust Him to lead as you place Him first in your life will have a tremendous impact on your life here, and in the life to come.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 383
Philippians 4:6-7
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The Feeling of An Uncertain Outcome
A feeling I get at times is being anxious. During preparation time to write this week's post I looked up the definition of anxious, here is what it means: experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
This is a feeling perhaps most of us feel at times, though it is not constant it comes up on occasion. Going to God's word and prayer is a practice I am developing at all times, this practice leads me to what God teaches us. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Philippians 4:6-7 and here we encounter Paul speaking to the Church in Philippi:
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
This verse alone teaches us what we must do when a feeling of anxiousness comes over us. Looking back and thinking of my mom raising five kids on mom's own, I am sure mom had these feelings. With that said I often recall mom standing in the kitchen reading mom's Bible and praying, or mom in mom's prayer corner of the house praying. My mom found a way to do deal with this possible feeling of anxiousness.
God will give you peace, and the peace to know what if any other actions are needed. Trust in God when you have these feelings of anxiousness, go first to the Lord in prayer and through His Word, and let Him guide you to peace.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.
