Week 303
Hebrews 13:1-2
1 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. 2 Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
At the PT facility they have this white board where the employees like to make write what day it is, not the day of the week, but rather what "special day" it is for example today is "World Kindness Day". In tonight's verse comes from the book of Hebrews which tells us just that to love one another as brothers and sisters, and it goes on to say to show hospitality to strangers. I think this is a very important topic and concept that may be missing today.
I frequent a grocery store a lot and one of the things that I like to do is be friendly and kind, and as much as it uplifts me I know it perhaps uplifts the other person(s). There are times when I may not feel great or have a lot on my mind and I may neglect showing kindness, but when one person says hi to me it uplifts me, so this is on reason I can think of that it uplifts others when we are kind. Even more so this is what the Bible calls us to do, that is to be kind. As Christians when we are kind to others we are showing Jesus to them and this is the most important aspect about being kind.
My mom taught me this concept of being kind to others and I know now that it comes from being a follower of Christ, as my mom tried to show kindness to others all the time. However in many cases being kind to others may also backfire, that's especially when we need to remember we are kind because we are called to be this way. Once my mom went out and got clothes for the neighbor's new born baby. I initially was wondering why mom did this, because we didn't have a "relationship" with them. Well mom went over and gave them the clothes one afternoon and the mother looked at my mom though she was thankful, said "can you please control your dog, she barks too loud". Now I wasn't there but when mom told me about this I felt upset but my mom felt even worse, however this did not prevent my mom from showing kindness to them.
As Christians we need to always remember we serve God and trust in Him. We follow what Jesus says and know that through the power of the Holy Spirit that no matter how others perceive our kindness we represent Him. After all it is God's kindness to us that saves us through Jesus Christ.

Matthew 25:40
"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'
What is said by many this time of the year is "Happy Holidays" in the plural form. What is meant by this gesture is Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukkah, Happy winter solstice, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy New Year's Day. I think it is interesting that this is used a lot today, and for the most part I think it's OK as long as the heart of the season is still to be remembered. In general it is always right to do for others however especially during this time of the year, it is something that should not be forgotten. In tonight's verse we see Jesus sharing parables, and when we come to verse 40 of the 25th chapter of Matthew we see Jesus, inform us that when we have helped those in need we do it for Him.
During this time of the year I feel that I worked all year for these moments to help family, friends but at the same time I feel an urging to contribute in some way to others who are in need. Growing up with mom I know we didn't have a lot at all and there were always generous people who would help us in ways that would be BIG for us. For example we had the Church bring gifts and food for us and this helped us. Mom would be appreciative, as mom knew the generosity given to us was from God.
So Thanksgiving is coming upon us in about a week, it's important as you are able to take care of yourself (by the grace of God) to also consider others who are in need and could use a blessing in anyway. It doesn't necessarily need to be a monetary award, it could be a phone call, a smile, spending time with others. In all it's about considering others more than yourself. Why not start today?

Week 305
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
"6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."
Related to last week, one of the thoughts I had today was how are we to give to others is just as important as it is to give to others. Giving out of compulsion which is something Paul wrote about to the Corinthians is what I like to focus on tonight. Paul writes that giving reluctantly (in an unwilling and hesitant way), or out of compulsion (the action or state of forcing or being forced to do something) is not something they should do because God loves a cheerful giver. We must remember that though this letter was written to the Church in Corinth that it is also for us today.
When grocery shopping for example especially during this time of the year, we may encounter someone ringing a bell to give money for a charity, we should give if we feel led to as this would be done without feeling reluctant or out of compulsion. The question that comes up is how do we know we are led to? Well a practice that can be invoked in regards to this specific situation or in any situation is in your prayers to ask the Lord to lead you in giving and when to give. It is something I know I will be praying about. A lot of times I need to catch myself and make sure I am not giving to boost myself up and to make others see what I am doing. As kids we were given things this time of the year, by others who mom knew. Mom was always grateful, but specifically mom was grateful towards God for this.
As Christians we should remember that by giving we are doing so for the Lord. So today and everyday when you are deciding on what to give, consider how to give as well. Pray first and allow God to fill your heart, remembering all that Christ has done for us and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you.

Week 306
Proverbs 18:24
One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
I did some research this week in regards to friendship, as I wanted to know what the Bible has to say about this subject. My interest in this subject came about because a friend of mine has been having trouble with his friend, who effectively has become controlling and demanding. Their friendship seemingly seems dissolved for the time being. As I researched this subject I came to tonight's verse, Proverbs 18:24. The writer of Proverbs states that unreliability in a friend can lead to ruins however there is a friend that sticks closer than brother.
So what does this mean, and who is that friend that sticks closer than a brother?
I recall a day when I was about to go through a dramatic life changing event and I was filled with all sorts of emotions, happiness, content, nervousness, etc. I was talking to my mom and my mom told me on this life changing day, to "remember your mom is your best friend". It made me feel pretty good knowing my mom thought this, and I just said "thanks mom". So is this what the Proverbs mean?
From the research I did on this subject I realized that what the writer of Proverbs meant was that a genuine or authentic friend is someone who sticks closer than a brother, meaning he or she can be counted on. This friend will be there for you even more so than a family member. Since brotherhood is one of the strongest relationships we know, a friend who sticks closer than a brother is truly a person that will be there for you always.
Now that we know what this verse means, who is that friend? Well the simple, best and most concrete answer is Jesus. Our Savior Jesus Christ is truly the friend who sticks closer than a brother. No other friend can fulfill the meaning of this verse.
As Christians we will realize that we will undoubtedly develop friendships with others, but as life lingers on there will be times where that friend may change, move, get married, pass away, have their priorities change. If we live life depended on that friendship we may become disappointed. We should not run from friendship but we must truly know that their is only one who we can ultimately count on. Jesus call us His friends (John 15:14).

Matthew 6:1 1 "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
A few week ago I wrote about giving to others and to consider others before ourselves for example, giving to a charity this time of the year. One thing I want to make sure I address this week is about giving to others without others knowing, but our heavenly Father. Tonight's verse we see Jesus telling his disciples to be careful not practice your righteousness in front of others only to be seen by them, as doing so you will have no reward from God.
As a little kid, I always felt blessed especially this time of the year when people would bring food. My mom worked hard for us, and I never felt I needed anything extra, but it was always nice to receive things because it showed people cared. As I think back on those days I just remember people coming to the house dropping off food and presents and then leaving. I do not recall any showmanship or any "greater than thou" gestures.
Now as an adult I would be reminded of the past as I see others who are in need, and though my help is not always monetary I do try to help in any small way. However, the most important thing about giving is that we are giving not to get something in return, which could be praises from others, or the like but that we give never looking or considering that others are happy for what we are doing, but that we are making our Father in Heaven happy and honoring Him.
Giving and sharing should be about a life long commitment to honor Jesus.

Week 308
Isaiah 41:10 - Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
One of the most inescapable feelings that seems to over come a lot of us is being lonely this in of itself can produce so many other emotions. In tonight's verse we see that from the book of Isaiah that the prophet tells us from God to have no fear for God is with us and will strengthen, help, and uphold us.
As I was getting older I could see it on my mom's face that mom was feeling lonely, I think it had a lot to do with the fact that all of us were growing up, leaving school, and the home. Mom may not have felt needed much, I know that there were many times that I would start doing things on my own and mom tried to help, I could see now that mom was doing it to be involved. Feeling a lone is more of an emotion for the believer when you really think about it, as we are never really a lone. As the verse tonight shows God tells us that He is always with us, His strength, His help, he lifts us up. We as Christians just need to remember to turn to Him, in all times and He will guide us.
Later on in life as I looked over at mom (figuratively and literally speaking) mom had this calm peace. Today as I look back on this it is because mom's relationship with Jesus grew over the years and loneliness was never more less true. As Christians this is something we can do, start by realizing in every moment of our lives that we are never a lone we serve God. When we put this reality in motion and when the times come when we have this emotion of loneliness we can realize that He is with us, He is our strength, He will help us and He will uphold us. Keep tonight's verse on your heart always.

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Today is Christmas Day, in the town I live, it is rather unusual, I stepped outside a few minutes ago and realized that it's actually pretty warm, bright and clear. This can be thought of in a sense of how we should remember today and every day. In tonight's verse Paul tells that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, who is our Lord. As Christians we celebrate the birth of Jesus and at the same time, I myself and others also realize that as life continues every Christmas is never the same. This is especially true if we have lost someone who we love.
Growing up my mom did so much for us especially on Christmas, and as I reflect on this I recognize all this was by God's Glory. Mom would always give us $50 to spend on Christmas gifts and though we did not have a lot God provided my mom with the means and ability to do this. This brings a great point for as followers of Jesus Christ, God always was the provider, my mom was His and God allowed my mom to take care of us. Now that mom is not here, God shows that it's Him, and always Him that I am to look to as I His, and so are all who have placed their trust in Him. On "Christmas Day" two thousand years ago Jesus came to save us as we are His responsibility.
A lot of us will realize that as a kid we see things so differently than as adults, we are to know that though we may be missing someone today, because they have passed God is the provider, and He provides for that person today, as He has also provided that person for you while they were on this earth. That loved one who loves Jesus, who is no longer here today is actually experiencing life with Him. There's no Better Place.
So I encourage you this Christmas and every day to think upon Jesus, setting your mind not on things here on earth, but the things to come
-Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.- with eternal life with Jesus first. As a believer know the ones you have "lost" in this world will be seen by you again in the new life -1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Believers Who Have Died 13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.- Trusting in Jesus that He will keep His promise for eternal life. So rejoice today in the promise of God.
-Revelation 21:4
He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death' or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

Psalm 32:7-8 "7 You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. 8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you."
Have you ever felt like when things are not going the way you planned that you get this sense of feeling overwhelmed? All throughout scriptures we see many people who encountered adversity, to the point where they could of just stopped and laid themselves down, curled into a ball and quit. In tonight's verse we see David, and whatever obstacle or problem he encountered he trusted in God to deliver him. David wrote that he found comfort in God as he called Him, his hiding place that God will protect him from the trouble that surrounds him and not only protect him, but deliver him. Furthermore David wrote that God will instruct and teach him, in the way he should go, will counsel him, as God, Himself watches over him. What a way to live especially in times of feeling overwhelmed.
My mom as I mentioned many times encountered a life that mom was not expecting, suddenly mom had 5 kids, a marriage that was gone, living in a country without family and even friends, feeling all a lone and overwhelmed. Yet I recall my mom (though not a saint) was able to keep things together, rely on God in moments of fear and doubt, and raise us.
Many times I go through things -and even so now- one of the lessons I learned and am learning from mom, is to rely on God. When I feel overwhelmed, and things are not going the way I planned or had hoped for I can recall, my mom, even more so as I draw near to Jesus I can recall David and others from scripture and the things they went through yet in one way or another God delivered them. God never left them, and the same is true for us today.
When you are feeling overwhelmed for any reason, perhaps things didn't go the way you had hoped despite your best efforts, know that you can turn to scriptures and even other faithful people you may know in your life. By turning to scriptures and perhaps others you can be reminded of others in this example David, who faced great oppositions, one in which he was being pursued by King Saul, who wanted to kill him. Then seeing how God took care of them, know that the same is true for you, as you are a follower of Jesus Christ, and not only will He protect you He will instruct you on what you should do. We serve the one True God.

Week 311
Philippians 4:12-13 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
Contentment is something that many of us have a hard time dealing with, after all most of us want to push past something to achieve whatever it is we are looking to obtain. However, contentment takes godly strength.. In tonight's verse we see Paul write to Philippians teaching them about contentment. Paul is saying here that he has gone through times when he has been in need and when he has plenty, however he has learned the secret to being content and that is through Jesus that gives him strength to be content in any of those situations.
This is true for us, we understand that we want to achieve something, however that something is only achievable not by our own means but by God who gives us the strength to achieve it, and if not God gives us the strength to be content, because all things are from God. This is a hard "pill" to swallow for most, as many believe the opposite. However the verse is telling us that we are to be content with plenty or being in need because God is our provider. My mom I know went through many periods were mom only had so much to give us, however even with that mom did mom's best. Perhaps mom would look at us and want to give us more, but my mom by God's strength had to be content in what mom could give us, because ultimately all things come from the Lord.
While being content may seem like a way of quitting, it really is not. God has a path for each of us, and we must being willing to push through to achieve what we may feel lead to. At the same time we must also understand that if we strive and still have not achieved what it is, we are looking for it may be that in fact is God's will. We are to always be content.
