Week 384
Psalm 56:3-4
3 When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
4 In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?
When Fear Creeps In
Last week we discussed feelings of anxiety, this week we'll go into the feeling of fear. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages Psalm, 56:3-4 as scribed by David when he wrote the Psalm after being captured by the Philistines.
Psalm 56:3-4
3 When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
4 In God, whose word I praise,
in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?
No matter what in this life there will be moments of fear that will creep into your mind and hearts and I can relate this back to mom. When I was growing up I could remember a time when mom was walking home from the grocery store with mom's purse strapped to mom's shoulder, when out of nowhere someone ran behind mom snatched the purse and ran off. Mom came home devastated as this was the only money we had, I remember mom feeling really sad as mom looked at us four. Even in that dark time, I can recall mom being strong, sad yet strong as mom trusted in the Lord as fear of "what is now" crept in. Even as I write this it causes me to pause and to be grateful to God.
All of us will have this feeling of fear that will creep up in our lives however if we know that we truly belong to God, we must always remember He is with us through every single aspect of our life.
So when fear creeps in go to Psalm 56:3-4 remember the words of David recite them, personalize them and internalize them for yourself. Trust that no matter what happens in this life you are under the loving arms of your Creator.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Isaiah 41:10
10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Know That God Is With You
As much as achieving something in life is great, the flip side is true, that is not achieving something in life is not so great. Take for example studying for an exam and trying your best, then suddenly you take the exam only to realize that you were not prepared enough and therefore you did not pass. This can feel like a real low point. Just this past week I had to take an exam I was studying for and the results were not what I wanted. Doubt starts to creep in and I wonder if I was doing the right thing by spending time studying, how I was studying etc. In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Isaiah 41:10, here these words of the Lord:
Isaiah 41:10
10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
When I was younger I recall my mom struggling through certain obstacles and situations, one thing mom taught me perhaps, as a result, is this little phrase "God is watching you." That simple phrase made me feel accountable, that no matter where I go God was with me, watching me, and protecting me. Now that phrase has changed a bit for me, I now say "God is with me". Going back to the exam I took, I questioned whether I should continue to take this exam again, even if I should, however as I think through it, there are reasons why I have these questions. The reason I have these questions is because of fear.
Remembering something my mom taught me that now translates for me to "God is with me" reminds me that He is in fact with me and will strengthen me and protect me. Today if you are struggling with questions of whether you should or shouldn't do something, that is important to you, that though you try hard it just didn't work out, go to the Lord for direction, and remember no matter what "God is with you!"
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Joshua 1:9
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
When Those Butterflies Arise
Last week we discussed "knowing that God is with us", it was the start of this week, where I started to get discouraged about some dealings at work. This morning I received a missed call, it was through that call that regardless of what's going I was reminded to remember God is with me/us. As I was researching what to write this week, I recall a scripture similar to last week, that has been a thriving part of my life, it is from Joshua 1:9 and is one of my favorite verses:
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
In the face of any issue or scenario, anyone can become discouraged, for one reason or another. A reason could be that issue or scenario seems paramount, it's in those times, we need to recall an important principle: "to look back, look up and look forward". As Christians looking back recalling what God has done in your past, for me it was remembering how God brought mom through many circumstances in life, for example waiting on a welfare check to pay bills and to buy groceries. Looking up, trusting God will take care of you no matter what, as I recall many situations in my life where I wasn't sure what is going to happen next for example after a job loss. Looking forward, by looking back at what God has done for you in the past, looking up trusting God, and looking forward knowing that God was, is, and will be with you wherever you go as the verse for tonight states.
As Christians, we are not immune to problems in this world, but we must remember that because we are followers of Christ He will see us through every one of them. So when those butterflies arise, remember Joshua 1:9, and "look back, look up, and look forward" and see what God will do through you.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 387
Luke 5:5
5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
Obeying The Lord
One of the main things I struggle with is making decisions, however, it is not necessarily the decision itself it's more about whether my decisions are Christ-focused or are focused on me and what I want. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Luke 5:5, where Jesus encounters Simon, (who later would be called Peter) for the first time here. Simon and his fellow fisherman had been working all night and had not caught any fish, however, Jesus tells him to let down his nets into the deep water. Simon was reluctant but because he heard Jesus speak he obeyed:
5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
Now today, we do not hear God audibly, however, in the quietness of our spirit we can hear and obey where God is leading us through the Holy Spirit who guides us. With that said, we can have answers to when we need to make a decision, accomplish a task, or whatever else we need to do, what we need to is start the process. What I mean by starting the process is not wait until the proverbial fork in the road comes, but to start by first being in God's word, seeking wise counsel, and through prayer (paraphrased from Romans 12:2), daily.
When we were growing up mom brought us up as Christians. The one thing I even today can still hear my mom saying to me is "pray to God". This is something that inspires me to always remember to be in prayer and God's word so that I will know His will for my life and obey.
After Simon let down his nets in the deep, scriptures say that Simon had caught so much that he needed help bringing the catch in and it was so much that the boat began to sink:
Luke 5:6 "When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink."
Where in your life are you clearly hearing from the Lord and still not obeying? It is something we should all do that is to hear and obey. It is not to obey to "get attitude" we need to have, it is the obey because He knows, more than we can ever think.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Galatians 6:9
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Doing Good
A lot of times I find myself very exhausted from the work I do. I work hard at work, train hard in the gym, study many different subjects, and because of these things and much more, I find myself exhausted. I always ask myself first: am I following God first and letting Him guide me. In the case, I just described my answer is yes. In tonight's verse we come to Galatians 6:9, where we find Paul after exhorting the Galatians in his letter about the things they should avoid he wanted them to know that growing weary as Christian though this will happen to not lose sight that they will reap a harvest:
9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Just thinking through life and how mom raised us, as I look back and now see myself in my mom's "shoes" I could see clearly how mom would be so much overwhelmed with things in life. For example raising four kids, no matter how good we were, or not so good, there are just things in life with regards to this that would make my mom (or anyone) weary. However leaning on Christ knowing that you know that the direction you are going is the path He has for you could make this journey ever stronger, knowing that in time you will see what God has for you.
I think this is the key to know whether what you are doing is following God's plan. Then as Christians, though we will grow weary we must remember the outcome, the harvest.

Week 389
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
Studying your Bible
Just this week I had a text conversation with an old colleague of mine. I asked him if at times he wondered if Jesus really existed and he said no, but he questioned why people say things like "you must tithe in order to be blessed". In tonight's verse we come to 2 Timothy 3:16-17, in it we encounter Paul's letter to Timothy, the young pastor. Paul was communicating the strength of scripture and it's ability to transform us, because it is God's word:
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
When I was growing up mom taught us many things, one of the things that I believed molded and shaped me to who I am today in Christ, was that mom had home Bible studies where mom led us in studying God's word through a children's Bible and mom also encouraged us as we got older to read our Bibles. For me what stemmed from that was to grow daily in knowing God, and to draw closer to Him. God's word has the ability to correct us and that also applies to others.
When I was text messaging my old colleague I told him I agreed, many people which include Pastors read God's word, and encounter verses like Malachi 3:10, and say, tithe and you will be blessed. Studying that verse and all verses, we must understand we must take God's word literally and consistently if we do so we will understand that in that verse for example God is not talking to us specifically, but that it is for us, however taking it consistently we'll will understand that we standing on the other side of the cross, we know that God has already given us the only true blessing we need, Jesus Christ. Thus everything else is secondary.
The point I made to my old colleague was that we must study God's word, and pray and by the power of the Holy Spirit we will know what His word says and doesn't say.

Week 390
1 Peter 1:19-20
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
Knowing God's Word
One of the main focuses I wrote about last week was in regards to "studying your Bible", this week, I wanted to touch on this as well. I tend to spend time pondering God's word and asking myself questions. A question I came up with was this: "Did God make this world perfect (emphasis on perfect), Adam and Eve messed up then (emphasis on then) God decided Jesus needed to come?". In tonight's verse we come to 1 Peter 1:19-20, this verse answers this question:
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
When I was growing up my mom always emphasized that we should read our Bibles. Mom went as far as having Bible study at home, and mom would lead us in song and reading through a children's Bible. This emphasis I believe sparked inside me the need and interest today in knowing God's word. As we read through God's word the truth comes out and tells things we may have questions about, it brings us closer in our relationship with Christ, it pours out a passion inside of us to talk to others about Jesus, just to name a few.
As I pondered the question above and study God's word, the answer is clear that God always had the plan of redemption for His people before He ever created the world. We know this as well because we take Him literally and consistently, as we understand that God is all-knowing and therefore nothing surprises our Creator.

Week 391
1 John 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.
What Does The Bible State
I posed a question to a friend of mine asking him a question about the Bible to get his thoughts. The question I posed brought up his own questions, for example, he wondered "why would God cast Satan down to Earth knowing he would tempt us?" and a statement "We should love God out of our own desires...". In tonight's verse, we enter into 1 John 4:19: "We love him, because he first loved us."
During my early years, my mom led me to Christ, through many means, one of those was through encouraging me to read my Bible daily. This encouragement led me to seek God through His word and eventually read the Bible for all it's worth to know what it states and doesn't state.
During the discussion with my friend, I mentioned 1 John 4:19 to him to address his statement above. Another part I mentioned was that it's important not to impose on God what we think He's like, rather it's important to go into His word, read and study it to know Him.
As Christians, this is a concept we must carry with us. Our desire should be to know Him, specifically to know Him truthfully, and we can do this by reading and studying our Bibles. When we do this we will know what it states and won't be lead astray by our own thoughts, and what others say.

Recently on social media, discussions were going around about same-sex marriage in a post, posted by a seeming unbeliever. The "conversation" turned to believe in Christ when a Christian responded to the post. Suddenly in retaliation to the post, someone asked this question:
"What happens to the billions of people including atheists who do not believe in your God?"
In tonight's verse we again visit 1 Peter 3:15:
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
Growing up with mom, mom always spoke to us about God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Mom made efforts to ensure we would have a foundation in Christ by holding nightly Bible studies and taking us to Church. With that said, this prompted me to want to know more about Jesus as I grew up seeking a relationship with Him. As with any good relationship, we grow together and this strengthens our bond to each other. Much the same with our relationship with Him. Things I learned as a kid were foundational and as I grew older the foundation was strengthened by growing closer to Christ in knowledge and truth. Therefore we as Christians as we grow with Christ should desire to seek out the truth. This does not mean that every question that the "skeptic" poses to us will we have an answer right away. However, researching each question and returning to the "skeptic" may win them over to Jesus and will prepare us the next time questions of the sort arise as long as we are doing this with gentleness and respect.
I can state that over the last 6 years I have been answering the "skeptics" questions, and when I don't know I research and return. What I noticed is that when I do this, God supernaturally brings more and more people to me to win them over to Christ by God's grace. The same is true for all Christians if we prepare good reasons, and answer the "skeptics" with gentleness and respect there will be more chances that we can win over people to Christ by God's grace.
Love you mom and I Love you, Lord.
