Weekly Verse and Song for Tonight Weeks 259 - 267
January 09, 2019
Week 259
Philippians 4:6-7
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
A friend sent me a text today and told me her Grandpa was in the hospital, they believe because of a clogged artery or something to that affect.
After I asked her to keep me posted I prayed for her Grandpa and then told her that I had said a prayer for him. In tonight's verse we see the Church at Philippi being addressed and the writer tells us to not worry, but to pray about everything, and let your hearts and minds be at peace in Christ Jesus.
This is very important, when we pray it is not that things are done, and whatever we pray for will be "granted" by God, but that when we pray we let God's peace overcome us and that is what we focus on in Jesus' name. I prayed for my friend's Grandpa for God to be with him, and also I prayed for my friend and her family, that God be with them.
My mom I would see at various times, praying right before mom's morning coffee, and sometimes I wouldn't catch that my mom was praying. So I would begin to ask mom a question and then I would say to myself "Oh", and wait for mom to finish. My mom was focused on praying to God and nothing else would interrupt, my mom as mom would pray for us, and those around us. This practice and knowing how my mom raised us, was to always pray. Praying for those around us is very important.
We may not have all the answers but God does. Praying and petitioning the Father is what we are to do, then leaving the rest in His hands, without anxiousness and letting God's peace overcome us as we trust in His ways.
Love you mom and I love you Lord.

Week 260
1 Samuel 30:9-10
David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. Two hundred of them were too exhausted to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.
Lately it seems that fatigue has overtaken me the interesting is that I don't see much that has changed in what I normally do from day to day, but it seems to be a constant. In tonight's verse we see David and his men going to fight the Amalekites, however from a previous battle some of David's men were exhausted. They were exhausted so much that they stayed and could not follow David into battle. This summed up to be two-hundred men who stayed behind while the rest of David's men went into battle.
I could hear mom now telling me to "take a rest", and I think this is very important in life. Some of David's men were fatigued not ready for the battle so they rested and this is true for us. If we are to fulfill God's will for our lives adequate rest and recovery is important, especially when we age. The things that keep us all busy will be there, but stopping what we are doing, whether it's an upcoming exam we are studying for, working out, work, whatever the case may be just stopping and resting will better equip us for the battle ahead.
Love you mom, and I love you Lord.

Week 261
1 Samuel 30:8
And David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I pursue after this band? Shall I overtake them?” He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue.”
Asking of the Lord is so important in every area of our lives, it should never be taken lightly no matter what the ask is. In tonight's verse we encounter David asking of God whether he should pursue the Amalekites who raided an area known as Ziklag and took the Israelites wives and kids. At first our thoughts would be, "YES! of course because these people have raided your land and took you wives and kids". However, what we see in this passage is wisdom which is David, asking of God, inquiring of the Lord what He should do.
I know a lot of times when I have faced some sort of opposition, my mom would tell me to pray to God. This advice is echoed in these pages of scriptures and in my life today. David asked of God because he didn't want to move without God's direction. Last week, I needed to rest, but I know myself and I knew I wouldn't as I'm the type of person who really can't sit still. So I asked God for strength to rest, and in the end I received it.
Asking of God should be the believer's goal, when faced with anything, dating, marriage, relationships, job changes, etc. Moving on our own and without Him, will eventually have disastrous results.

Week 262
1 Peter 5:6-8 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Today I am in Nebraska away from my home state of Illinois and it is the "artic day" where the temperatures will get to -25. Before I left home I had a plan in place since I will be gone for 2 weeks. I got the cars taken care of (I hope), I tried to secure the homes (I hope), in other words I did what I thought I needed to do to ensure things will be safe, yet I worry. Now it could be that everything "I hope" is taken care of will be OK however I still have anxiety.
In tonight's verse Peter tells the people to first humble yourself under God's mighty hand that He may give us strength in due time, let God lift your anxieties for the devil is looking to constantly cause us to fear and have this anxiety. I recall many times how mom was always worried and how mom had a very hard time dealing with things in life. I may have inherited some of these traits from Mom, however as I walk this Earth daily, I realize that all I could ever do is my best and trust God.
Mom, though had worries in life developed a calmness which came over mom during mom's final years here. This calmness comes from knowing and trusting in God. So this is what I am trying to do in my case, in regards to my specific situation, and if something should go wrong, or if something goes right it is God who allows it, and God who teaches me through these circumstances. My final decision is to trust God and as Christians that's really all our final decision needs to be.

Week 263
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
This is Week 2 in Omaha, Nebraska and today in Chicago, IL there is to be an ice storm. I'm sure there will be plenty of Facebook posts, and maybe friends texting me, it's hard for me because I am away from home, I can't look after the house there and today is also my mom's birthday.
I will admit seeing all the issues from a far is alarming and concerning, but at the same time I will admit that trusting in God through this circumstance and any circumstances are the thoughts that come to me. I'm not saying one should never take precautions and all, but once these precautions have been taken, ultimately a focus and trust in God is all that really matters. In Joshua's time and in the verse tonight we see that God tells Joshua to be strong and courageous, not to be afraid or discouraged for God is with him wherever he goes. God tells Joshua this several times and a quick study of the verses in Chapter 1 of Joshua gives a thought that perhaps Joshua was afraid to take the leadership role of Moses.
Today this truth that was true for Joshua is also true for us. God will never leave us or forsake us. In this life many things will test us, but a firm foundation in Christ is the way to live. My mom did so many things for us growing up, and mom was alone no husband, no family or friends to help mom raise 5 kids. Yet when I think through things mom never showed me as a kid any signs of fear, mom just seemed driven to take care of us and make sure we were OK. Mom believed in Jesus Christ and mom's foundation was in Him, and therefore mom trusted in God knowing He ultimately is the one who takes care of us, and this is the way mom lived.
As Christians we must live this way trusting in Christ and knowing He will take care of our needs no matter what obstacles are there.
Love you mom, Happy Birthday in Heaven. Love you you Lord.

Week 264
Hebrews 4:16
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
Last week I talked about a circumstance that greatly discouraged me in regards to traveling while in Chicago (my home city) it was one of the worst cold fronts it's being called a "polar vortex". I was stressed about traveling, in general but to add on top of it the weather and how the house with a seemingly bad furnace, and the car would hold up made my stress level elevated. I let some friends know about my concern about traveling during this time, however these same friends sent me texts, telling me how bad of a snow storm it was, how hard the freeze was, people having busted pipes, etc. Now let me say I am not angry with these friends for doing this and adding to my stress. I just felt disappointed.
I had a chance to fly home one of the weekends, but thought through it, and prayed about God taking care of things while I was away. I knew fully that I made provisions for those "things". In the middle of all this I decided to trust God despite all the discouragement, about the weather from friends.
I returned home on Friday night, and everything that I was concerned about was fine, and the words that kept coming to me was "God's grace". One of the things I know my mom told me to do growing up was to read my Bible and to "pray to God". I know that I am a "worrier" at times, (something I am praying to overcome), but prayer and trusting in God is so important.
As a Christian I know God allows certain things in our lives to stretch our faith, to make us understand that we are dependent on Him, not on us. Faith is something we must exercise, and I know I am exercising it to get stronger in my relationship with Jesus. As a believer, we need to strengthen our trust in Christ. Even if I had returned and everything was wrong, I know God will carry me through that, and so will He for all who trust in Him.

Week 265
2 Peter 1:5-8
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Sometimes it seems life can be so overwhelming and then we start wondering and question where God is. This questioning, can come through a variety of life circumstances such as losing a love one, getting a disease, having pain in your body, a disrespectful son or daughter, a job loss, or anything else. Needful to say it may be during these circumstances that one may question are they loved by God.
In tonight's verse we see Peter telling us that if we add to our faith goodness, knowledge, self control, perseverance and love, continuously pursuing these things we will know Jesus more. This is a very important lesson to add to our walk with Him, as we go through life and we encounter these circumstances as described above, we will begin to see each of those from God's perspective rather than our own.
My mom might have questioned why certain things were happening and where God was. However as time continued I know 100% my mom started looking at life from God's perspective as my mom not only had a peace, but also a level of wisdom that made me appreciate mom more. This wisdom came because mom was walking with the Lord closer and closer through out life.
As Christians before circumstances arise we must add to our faith, goodness, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love. Doing so now and making this a practice will increase our knowledge of Christ and we will see our circumstances from God's view point.

Week 266
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
I often find myself telling others this common truth for various reasons, in regards to The Bible. That common truth is "The Bible was written for us, not necessarily to us", and I know many may disagree and that's OK. The reason why I bring this up is because the Bible's truths are true for us today. In tonight's verse we see Joshua as he is about to take lead of the Israelites and lead them to the Promise Land. As Joshua is given instructions by God, God repeats this phrase over and over, "...Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.". Though this was spoken directly to Joshua, the truth of that verse is true today.
Recently at work I encountered various trials that threatened my standing, in this case I was tempted to be afraid, however I felt the Lord's presence telling me to be strong, be wise, and you will overcome this. Now this was not audible just a feeling a leading. When we are followers of Jesus this often can be the case as our hearts are attuned to the Holy Spirit, and this leading can be clear for a believer.
I recall a story where mom told me that one night on a dark road mom was in trouble and as mom was in anguish, and crying out to God, mom looked up and as clear as Jesus being on a "movie screen" (as mom described), mom stated mom saw the face of Christ. Mom knew at that moment mom would be OK.
Having pain and suffering in this life is true for every person, whether they are a believer or not. However, it is through the dark times where pain and suffering occur that we realize more and more that Jesus is with us. Our role is to remember that God is with us, and to seek Him through prayer and you'll find Him always and He will provide His peace and comfort in His time.

Week 267
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3
he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.
4
Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
5
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever."
This week at Church we sang the song below Psalm 23. This morning I woke up singing this song, having it be on my mind. One of the signs I say for a great worship service is if one can remember the song that comes to mind after the worship service is over and especially if one can recall it during the week. On top of all this Psalm 23 is my mom's favorite verse and we had it inprinted on the back of mom's service card.
It's a Psalm of David that he wrote, today it is also for us. As Christians, we can always know that our guidance is from the Lord, He sends His Holy Spirit to protect and guide us here. For me it's always encouraging to recall this Psalm not only in times of angst or tormoil, but simply as a reminder to know that God is with us, His goodness and love is always with us, even when we aren't in turmoil. Of course it is great to remember this Psalm when you are in the middle of a troubling situation to remind you that He is with us.
I would even go as far to say if there is a Psalm to remember forever, while we are still living here on earth, and if this is the only Psalm we memorize this is one to remember. The Psalm speaks of days of our lives, and it ends by stating "..and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever". It's this last verse that reminds me today where my mom is, and reminds me that this life is fleeting.
Praise be to God who is our shepherd.
