Week 411
2 Timothy 2:13
if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.
God is Faithful
It struck me this morning as I was getting ready that as I face obstacles daily that it is important to remember to see everything coming from God. As I was pondering this over obstacles I am facing I felt reminded that no matter what God is faithful to us, for we are His. In tonight's verse we encounter 2 Timothy 2:13:
"if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself."
As I mentioned before my mom was the one who I credit with leading me to the Lord at a young age. As this is the case I realize that giving my life to Christ to paramount to my faith but it did not exclude my own faithless thoughts. Now being older I see God working on me to lessen faithless acts as I try my best to put into the practice of seeing everything coming from God. As I put this into practice the burdens and worries of life don't go away but dealing with them becomes easier.
Even though faithless acts can occur on our part God remains faithful working on us through the Holy Spirit to increase our faith in Him. Seeing everything coming from God is a practical and more importantly a true way to see every obstacle and every situation. Much so that it should cause us to state and trust "Lord whatever you want me to learn from this I trust that you are allowing it for your divine purpose."
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 412
Matthew 11:29
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
The Perfect Time
This past year I spent a lot of time, trying to work as hard as I could to finally have a break in December and enjoy Christmas. I worked as hard as I could to get things done, all year to just enjoy the Christmas season. Inherently there is nothing wrong with this mindset, however, there is something wrong with the idea of looking for the perfect time in situations, people, or circumstances.
In tonight's verse, we come to Matthew 11:29, where we see Jesus teaching us where we are to place our rest:
"Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
See growing up mom always made Christmas special for us, it was a nice time for all of us I would say. Mom would make special food and give us each a small amount of money to spend on ourselves. One thing I didn't really understand was the stress mom could have been under, mom struggled for us and I think mom would scrimp and save just to give us something that we could spend on ourselves, in other words, it wasn't easy it wasn't the perfect time for mom to give us something extra.
After putting money into an old car this year which required a new engine, etc., and having it fail several times, even after having this done, today it failed again. I am not upset so much over the fact that it failed so much as the time that it failed. See I was looking for this time of the year to find rest, as it was my perfect time. However, I am realizing through the Lord that the perfect time doesn't exist, and my perfect time can only be when I have my rest in Him, not in situations, people, or circumstances.
As Christians we should remember that our rest, our peace comes from Jesus Christ alone, no situation, no people, or circumstance can replace this. We must seek Christ and know that He is our perfect time, for He is our rest.

Luke 14:28
28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
Count The Cost
I am a planneer in general. However in many situations lately it seems that I do not plan well, or think through things. This morning I noticed something wrong with one of the windows outside of the house. I grabbed a ladder and though I knew it would not reach the gutter I decided to lean it on the siding. As I did this the ladder made a marking on the siding. I subsequently wanted to try and remove that marking. When I did so I scratched or scuffed it further using the rag I was using and soap.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Luke 14:28:
28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
Here in these pages, we see Jesus speaking about planning.
When I was growing up I know mom would always plan things. Mom planned how much money mom had to spend on food, what mom would make for dinner, what days mom would go to the grocery store etc.
One of the things that I think is important as Christians is not to rush, to plan what we are doing if something comes up that requires our immediate attention to focus on even that when the time is right.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 414
John 16:33
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Having Problems
Christmas Eve and Christmas days were nice days this year for the most part for me. I wrote "for the most part" because though I was expecting to have some decent reflections, about the day, I ended up going to sleep at 12 am Christmas Day/The Next Day then woke up sick, very sick.
In tonight's verse, we come to a familiar one, where we read Jesus speaking about this world and the troubles we will face. From John 16:33:
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
When I got sick I realized how down I felt, the aggravation, the tiredness, the helplessness, etc. One thing I tried to keep in mind is that God was watching over me. I was reminded when I was younger that when I was sick mom would always look after me, and in fact, since my mom left in 2013 I was not sick to this level that I can recall. My mind however was focused that God would watch over me, even though my mom was not here.
As I think through this I am reminded that the time in fact did turn out to be a reflection of Christmas. As I was reminded that no matter what God was there to protect me in a world that was hostile toward Him. I want to encourage all of us especially when we are down, whether this is the path God has for us to remove us from this world or whether our sufferings are just a while, to reflect that Jesus is with us, He has overcome this world and will one day bring us into perfect peace with Him.
This year as you reflect on the end of the year, think about all Christ has done in your life and keep your focus on Him.
Love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 415
Hebrews 4:9-11
9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
Physical Rest
Continuing through last week regarding resting, I think it's appropriate to add some context this week about physical rest. I was looking back at the previous few weeks and thinking through the idea of rest then I started searching for Biblical verses regarding physical rest. I came to the scripture for tonight in the pages of Hebrews 4:9-11:
9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
The writer of Hebrews here is talking about physical rest, one where we stop doing the work we did the previous six days just as God did in Genesis 2:1-3. I think, however, the difference here is that God stops the work He did and this is ongoing, whereas we seem to be instructed to stop our works on the Sabbath day. I could still hear my mom now telling me to "take a rest". Mom would see me working a lot and not taking a break, therefore mom would see me tired, exhausted, and not really being productive. I believe mom knew that me taking a break was essential for my health and well-being as well as Biblical instruction.
Scriptures seem to require us to rest, physically from our works, though I believe the writer of Hebrews means this as more of a permanent message, Mark 6:31 ("31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.") points us additionally to the physical rest, one that even Jesus took while here.
As Christians, we must remember this to physically rest.

Joshua 1:9
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Drawing True Strength
Many times each year I end up with a lot to do. I keep myself pretty occupied with work and other activities I am involved in. Nevertheless this year I seem to be "extra" tired. One of the things that the Lord has placed on my heart is to rest. This rest is twofold physical rest and spiritual, but ultimately resting in Jesus.
In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Joshua 1:9. The background is that Joshua is taking over for Moses leading the people of Israel into the Promise Land. Perhaps frightened or worried to take the "reigns" God tells Joshua repeatedly to be strong and courageous for He will be with Him. This promise is true also for us today as followers of Jesus:
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Looking back towards my mom's life and recalling the things that my mom had to go through such as raising five kids on mom's own, budgeting extremely heavily, pulling a shopping cart in the snow to get us food, etc. Gives me the idea that if mom could do these things so can I. However, more directly I realize where mom drew true strength from. Mom drew true strength from Jesus. This is where my focus as a Christian lies, that my strength comes from being in a relationship with Jesus, and He alone goes with me, I don't go at this life alone.
Today as Christians, if you are having a hard time with the amount of work, or other things going on in your life, first and foremost know that Christ is with you, His promise is to be with us through every area of life. Know that you are not going at it alone, He is with you, and let Him guide you in how you should go about your obstacles.
Love you mom, and I love you, Lord.

Psalm 118:8
"It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans."
Confidence in Him
I had a conversation this past week with a friend about having an adult mentor. I asked my friend if he had a mentor that knew him well and could instruct him or give him direction in his life. My friend said no and asked why I was asking. The reason I was asking I replied was because I grew up with my mom who raised me well, and though I never felt like I wasn't missing something I think subconsciously I gravitated towards certain people who gave me certain directions in life about career choices, Bible questions, etc.
In tonight's verse we come to Psalm 118:8:
"It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans."
I continued with my conversation with my friend. I told my friend, that though I saught others and felt that I did have two mentors (one for the career I'm in) and another I could bounce Biblical questions off of, that these people did not "check" all the boxes. These people had their glaring and albeit uncomfortable flaws that I wouldn't model myself after. This discussion with my friend was more of a "self-discovery" one. After this discussion, I then stated that it was God, who I follow and that God would allow people in my life up to a certain point, for a reason. This reason was to show me that my dependence is on Him, not people. My full confidence and trust needed to be in Him.
As Christians, I think we can get caught up in seeking others for advice, etc. however this should never result in us being fully dependent on them. God may allow others into our lives for a certain reason, but our dependence our full trust should be placed in Him, not others. Praise be to God.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 418
Psalm 91:4
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You Are Not Alone
This morning when I got up one of the first things that came to my mind was "I have a lot to do". Then suddenly I felt a rapid calmness come over me, as I uttered these words to myself "You are not alone". Rather than thinking oh others too have a lot to do the calmness as I described was a reminder to me that God is with me and I am not alone.
In tonight's verse we come to the pages of Psalm 91:4, as I read through the verse I find comfort in knowing that I am truly not alone:
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
As I write these devotionals weekly I often think of mom and the struggles mom went through. I am reminded right now not that "if my mom could do it so can I..." but that mom was only strong though physically alone, God was with mom. Thinking through the verse it's clear for those who have placed their trust in Christ, that it is in God that we find strength, and comfort because He is faithful to us. We know that no matter what challenges we face we find what we need to face each day because He is with us. This comfort that we find the guidance we find is through the guidance of the Holy Spirit (John 16:13).
When we get up each day we know we may "...have a lot to do." this can be overwhelming but know that we are not alone He is with us should comfort us each day.

Week 419
Hebrews 13:16
And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Helping Others
Lately, I have been really busy and I don't have a lot of downtime, as such I am usually just "moving" as best I can even on the weekend. This past Sunday I got up early took care of a lot of things I needed to do and wanted to attend Church. So I left early to do a walk that usually takes me an hour do as I stepped outside I notice a neighbor who looked aggravated and I asked her what was wrong. The neighbor proceeded by stating that she can't shut off the water at her home and it was leaking from a faucet and water was everywhere. I asked her if I could help she said yes. In tonight's verse we come to Hebrews 13:16:
"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased."
When I was older I noticed mom was always trying to help others, with anything mom could do. For example, when a different neighbor had her first kid, though we were not close with the neighbors at all mom went and got some clothes for their newborn.
In my mind, before I asked my neighbor on Sunday if I could help I was wrestling with, "well I got up early and need to go to Church", but then I quickly told myself what good is going to Church if I am not "living" the Christian life. I tried to help and shut off the faucet valve but it was stuck, as I was making my attempts the plumber that the neighbor had called ahead of time arrived and was able to fully help.
As Christians, I think if we are able to help we should help, do our best, in those situations God may provide another means to help, but that should not be an excuse. We should help others in need as the Holy Spirit leads us and trust He will provide for our faithfulness.
I love you mom and I love you, Lord.
