Week 648

Being Protective

James 1:27 NIV

27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Today I was at the gym. It was a gym I hadn’t visited for over a week. What I hadn’t fully realized about this gym is that it is full of people who like others looking at them, and those who come there to talk rather than really train. I noticed a disturbance in the way one guy was interacting with my friend, and later he was staring at her. My friend and I discussed it, and she agreed with me that this person was staring at her in a way that made her feel uncomfortable.

In tonight’s verse we come to the words of James 1:27:

27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

When I was growing up, Mom always protected us—even pre-protecting us. We did not grow up in a nice area, and Mom did not want us getting into trouble. She carried out her duty of protecting us fiercely.

My friend told me about this, and I felt it was my duty to protect her.

As Christians, it’s important to know where we need to be in order to protect those whom God places before us.

Praise God.

Be blessed.

Love you, Mom, and I love you, Lord.

Trials

James 1:2-4 NIV

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

It was just this past week that I suddenly found myself in a trial that felt very emotionally debilitating. I was surprised by how I felt and how hard it was. I reached out to my sister and a friend for help. In tonight’s passage, we come to James 1:2–4 (NIV):

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

This verse was not something I was thinking of.

My mom always reminded me as a kid to read my Bible and to pray. This reminder was meant to provide me with truth. When I was in my emotionally debilitated state, it was so hard that I didn’t even want to pray.

I’m big into lifting weights, and using this as an analogy, as Christians we will all encounter trials. These trials are like weights, and the weight of a trial can either crush us or make us stronger. I am learning to think of it like this: the trial, being a weight, will produce stronger faith, like a muscle, and make us stronger.

When you are facing a trial today, tomorrow, or sometime in the future, do your best to remember that this trial, though weighty, will make your faith stronger. Most importantly, trust God in the trial and know that He is right there with you like a spotter under the bench press.

Praise God.

Be blessed.

Love you, Mom, and I love you, Lord.

Home with the One who is with us in the trial.

Week 641

Feeling Abandoned

Just this week I felt like I was abandoned by someone. It was very difficult. When someone you care about ignores you constantly and does not “let you in,” it’s one of those hurts that can feel like you’ve been stabbed in the heart and like you will not recover.

In tonight’s verse we come to the pages of 2 Timothy 4:9–17:

When my mom passed away, I was in a lot of pain. It was a pain that hurt so deeply I felt like I would never recover. I ended up having to go to Grief Share, which is a group counseling program, and through prayer I got better. I felt abandoned by my mom in some regards, but in time I realized that was not true.

In the current instance, I felt abandoned because of the work I put in with this person and the emotional support I gave. Then suddenly, it felt like it was taken from me.

One thing I always keep in mind is that when others hurt us, betray us, or even abandon us, we are reminded of something very profound: Jesus Himself was abandoned and left alone (Luke 22). When we are abandoned, understand two things—we get to experience what Jesus experienced, and we must remember that He is still with us: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” – Matthew 28:20

Praise God.

Be blessed.

Love you, Mom, and I love You, Lord.

The Prodigal

Luke 15:11-13

The Parable of the Prodigal Son
11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

Recently, I was talking with a friend, and everything seemed to be going well. We were having a good time and all. Then suddenly, things began to change, and things felt different. That difference continued until this person eventually disappeared.

In tonight’s verse, we come to Luke 15:11-13, where we encounter the Prodigal Son:

11 And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

I remember a time when I left home and moved to a different state. I left my mom and everything familiar. When I went on this “journey,” something changed in me. I realized something I hadn’t truly understood before—I realized how much I loved my mom.

Being away was very tough. I lost money, and a relationship I had crumbled in what felt like minutes. It was a harsh time for me, but I came to understand that God wanted me on that journey. It was a journey to teach me about my dependency on Him. God also showed me how much my mom meant to me.

About a year later, God brought me back, and within six months, my mom had passed. I had the chance to spend those six months with mom—time I would have lost had God not taken me away and then brought me back.

When I look back at this experience, I realize how much God was there—His plan and His timing. Today, if you have a friend, a child, or someone who has gone wayward, look to the Lord to calm your spirit. God knows what He is doing and will not leave you. He will take care of that wayward person. Your only goal, though it may feel like the most difficult thing, is to be patient and wait on God.

Trust God!

Be Blessed

Love you, Mom, and I love you, Lord.

Week 643

Colossians 3:2
Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

Our Priorities Lined Right

I recently reflected on the idea of pursuing your passions. I recently met someone who wants to go into the healthcare field. I didn’t realize all that she was doing to break in, and it was eye-opening. In tonight’s verse, we come to the pages of Colossians 3:2:

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

My mom always had two things for me to do: one was to read my Bible and pray, and the second was to study and do well in school. Mom always instilled this sense in me, and though sometimes I wished Mom wasn’t this strict, I understand it now. You see, in life we have choices, but the choices we make can affect us and others. At the same time, as Christians, when we are in the midst of a choice, or even before we are, we need to understand and seek God’s will for our lives.

God’s will for our lives is that we come to know Him even more each day, for it is true that we go through life, but we are to place God at the forefront. Not secondary, not third — first! The person I met impressed me because, though she was struggling with a lot while trying to break into the healthcare field, she placed God first in her life, trusting that He will lead her through the storms she is facing.

As Christians, we will all face trouble, but we must set our minds on Christ, not on the problems we have here, for when we do, we’ll realize that we are not facing these problems alone, but with God. There is no one better.

Praise God.

Be blessed.

Love you, Mom, and I love you, Lord.

Week 644

John 15:4 (NIV)“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”

Remaining in Christ

Just today I was at the gym when suddenly I noticed something that affected me emotionally. It wasn’t anger or fear — it was something else. I was caught by surprise, and my thoughts started going all over the place. I knew those thoughts were not good.
In tonight’s verse, we come to John 15:4:

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”

When I was younger, there were many times I wanted what my brother had, and my mom would encourage us to share. However, as I got older, my thoughts became less focused on what my brother had and more focused on who I was as a person. For me, this was a sign of maturity — not focusing on what I didn’t have, but instead looking at who I was becoming.

As time went on, I started becoming my own individual, and eventually I discovered who I was in Christ. I realized that my identity was in Him, not in myself.

here is freedom that comes from truly grasping this truth.

So today, as I started feeling these heavy emotional thoughts, I began reminding myself of who I am in Christ:
  • I am a child of God.
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12
  • I am loved by Him.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” — 1 John 3:1
  • I am made in His image.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” — Genesis 1:27
This became a powerful exercise, and those emotional feelings began to dissipate.

As Christians, we must remind ourselves who we are in Him. Our identity is not found in what we do or even in our own thoughts — our identity is found in Christ.

Remember, apart from Christ we can do nothing. Yet because of Him, we are who we are.

Praise God.

Be blessed.

Love you Mom, and I love You, Lord.

Ecclesiastes 4:9 NIV
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor

Making Time For OthersFor the past few weeks, I have found myself making time for others. Spending quality time with others at first did not seem like something I wanted to be geared up for, but over a short period of time, as I was doing it, the benefit was great. In tonight’s verse, we come to Ecclesiastes 4:9:
9 Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor

My mom showed me the importance of family. Mom always made sure my siblings and I grew together. One way she did that was by having prayer nights and songs, where we would listen as she read a children’s Bible and led us in songs.
This verse from Ecclesiastes 4:9 highlights the strength found in partnership and shared effort. When people come together and make space for one another, they are able to accomplish far more than they could alone. There is deep wisdom in not walking through life in isolation, but instead building relationships where support is mutual and consistent.
Working alongside others brings strength in moments of weakness and encouragement in times of doubt. Struggles become easier to carry when they are shared, and successes feel more meaningful when they are celebrated together. This verse reminds us that companionship is not just helpful but essential, showing that unity has a way of multiplying both resilience and joy in every part of life.
As Christians, keep reminding yourselves to show up for others when they need you.
Praise God.
Be blessed.
Love you, Mom, and I love you, Lord.

God's Favor

Proverbs 3:3-4

3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
    bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.

One of my friends has a positive outlook on life. She works hard, is very diligent, and most importantly, she lives for Jesus. Suddenly, this past week, while she was on a much-needed break with a friend, she received a call from a family member who needed help. My friend, though she was in a relaxed state, had to make the decision to help her family member because no one else would. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Proverbs 3:3-4:

3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
    bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.

This week, we'll examine the "love" part of the verse; next week, we'll discuss "faithfulness."

Mom always showed unconditional love for me. Even when I would do something wrong, Mom, in love, would discipline me. Toward the end of Mom's life here, I was there for her as best I could. You see, the love that I had for my mom was inherent and unconditional, and it was a love that spanned my lifetime and hers. Sometimes, though, that love is not easy. You have to accept their faults and be ready, when the time comes, to be there for those who need it.

By never letting love and faithfulness leave us, we win favor with God and with others. As we do so, we point to Christ, and we point others to His saving grace.

As Christians, let's keep reminding ourselves to never let love or faithfulness leave our daily walk.

Praise God.

Be blessed.

Love you, Mom, and I love You, Lord.

Being Determined

1 Corinthians 13:4
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Being Patient
Recently I had a meeting with someone who I have been texting and talking to a lot on the phone. After the meeting things looked positive, then suddenly it seemed like a “game.” As I started thinking about this, and about this week's writing, something I feel the Lord leading me to think about is being patient.

In tonight's verse we come to the pages of 1 Corinthians 13:4:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.”

Growing up I recall a time when I wanted a new gaming system, the Nintendo NES. I was excited. We did not have a lot, but my mom was able to give us $50 for the summer and $50 for Christmas. I asked Mom to save it so that I could get the gaming system for Christmas. When we finally had the money saved, I went to Toys “R” Us with my mom, only to find out that the Nintendo system was sold out. With that, I had to wait months and months until one day the manager of the store called my mom and said they had it in stock.

This was one of my first memorable experiences of learning to be patient.

One of the things I believe the Lord is opening my mind and heart to is being patient in all things, and this current situation is an example of both.
As Christians, whenever we are experiencing something, the most important thing to ask ourselves is, “What is the Lord trying to show me through this ____ (fill in the blank)?”

The Lord is sovereign over all things, including our interactions with others. Seek Him for answers.

Be Blessed.

Love you Mom, and I love you, Lord.
