Weekly Verse and Song for Tonight Weeks 540 - 548

Week 542
Gensis 25:31-34
31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.
HALT - Hungry
Continuing on the acronym we spoke about last week HALT (Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired), which was taking the other middle letter "T" we spoke about Tired. This acronym was from one of my favorite pastors Dr. Charles Stanley. One of the things I noticed about myself is that I tend to get a bit cranky when I do not eat on time. Well, when this occurs it seems that I may make bad decisions. In tonight's verse, we come to the familiar pages of Genesis 25:31-34:
"31 Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” 32 Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” 33 Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright"
In this passage, Esau decided to sell his birthright which he was entitled to since he was the elder brother for a meal.
When I was younger my mom always made sure we had food to eat while at home. I remember at school I would always be studying, but there came a point where I would get so hungry that would not be able to focus at all, so I would make sure I pack a lunch and eat and return. However, there were times were I would be so hungry that I would make a bad decision to take someone else's food.
As Christians were are vulnerable when we are hungry. These are times when we can be attacked. it is important to know to keep ourselves well-maintained so that wise decisions can be made.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 543
John 16:33
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Frustrations
We all face frustrations in our lives, some level great or small we all face it. For me today I was very frustrated and tired of work, I had a few teammates frustrate me with some of the tasks I was working on by criticizing me. I did not entirely blow up but I did get "visibly" upset. I left this experience thinking why am I working in this environment? In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of John 16:33:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Today many times as I was growing up I could see my mom always looking to rest. I know my mom would spend a lot of time in bed and at times I never thought anything of it. When I think about it today I think that my mom had a lot of weight of the world on my mom's shoulders. I know my mom would look to the Lord for help and support. At times mom would have friends who would visit and mom would spend time with them.
For the same is true, I feel I weight the world on me and because of this a lot of what I am doing or not doing can hurt me deeply. I had a call with a friend who told me, you just need to take a break and relax.
However, one of the questions that remain is why am I having these frustrations. Usually, my first inclination is to run. The Lord tells us in John that no matter what we will have trouble in this world, but as Christians we are to look to Him, as He knows and His yoke is enough to carry us through them. As I write this I am reminded to rest, physically and to rest in Jesus.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 543
Matthew 5:43-48
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Loving Those Who Persecute You
I talked about this before, so let me explain the situation. I daily go on walks on occasion I would see two people walking as well, when I see them I would greet them with a wave and or say hi and keep walking. Well, one day I decided to stop by and have a quick conversation. Well like usually I do I use a few jokes to exude friendliness. Ever since that day, these two people would avoid me, and when they would see me they would turn the nearest corner, it; was so bad that even if I was going to be parallel on the opposite side of the street they would turn the corner as well. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Matthew 5:43-48:
"43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect."
One of the things that I do is at times I think about my age and think did my mom face things that I am facing now? When I was younger my mom had a confrontation with someone who was yelling at mom from the outside of the home. My mom sat on the couch, thought through things, and approached this person very calmly, and the problem was dissipated.
Now I will say they are not my enemies, but I will say it is a form of persecution, as it deeply bothers me. As I pray about this and think through it, I believe the Lord is directing my steps for now. This is not easy, but I know that praying is something that I feel led by the Lord to do. As Christians, it is of utmost purpose to seek the Lord's guidance in these situations and allow the Lord to direct our steps.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
His Workmanship
Workmanship as defined by Oxford is the degree of skill with which a product is made or a job done. Taking this definition as an example Oxford further offers that "cracks on the bridge girders were caused by poor workmanship". As I ponder this verse I think about sin, sin causes cracks in all our lives. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Ephesians 2:10:
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
My mom was/is a pivotal person in my growing up. One of the main things Mom taught me was to always seek God in prayer, song, and through scripture. It was important for me to honor my mom, but it was not something I thought about consciously, what I mean is that it was something that became ingrained in my heart and my mind. This was something that my mom taught me from birth. As I learned from my mom I became closer to Christ and truly accepted Christ. With this
As I look throughout my life I realize that sin causes issues in my and a believer's life. Being saved by Christ we are God's workmanship, however, we know that we are not sanctified on our own meaning not sinless, but because we are saved we are covered by Jesus we are with Him.
Today as Christians we must remember that we are His workmanship only with Him. As non-Christians giving your life to Christ so that you are His workmanship, will remove the stain of sin.

Titus 2:11
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.
Our Great Leader
This morning on my morning walk I was thinking about work. I work with a manager who believes he should manage people by "assigning people to do work, disappearing, then asking how did that go, which results in questioning your actions, then suggesting things, then forgetting what he requested, then changing his mind, then later asking why are you doing it that way". In other words, he doesn't know how to be a good leader. As I was thinking through frustrating facts I realized that's not what God did. Jesus exemplifies what a true leader should do. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Titus 2:11:
11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.
When I look at my present circumstances and think about Mom I realize all that Mom had done to raise us. Mom kept us fed, mom made sure we had clothes to wear and a roof over our heads, mom would do things to accomplish this, saving and going to the store to get us groceries, and pulling a shopping cart despite any harsh weather conditions. Mom made sure to save money for clothes and shoes for us, and Mom did Mom's best to make us feel safe at home. Mom essentially was in the trenches with us to understand the conditions we faced as best as mom could as a good leader.
God commands something from us to abstain from sin, but not only did He command it, but through Jesus, God became sin. He understood what we face and the impossible task for us. So not only did God command something from us, but He took it upon Himself to fulfill what we could not, Jesus went into the trenches with us to protect and help us. Jesus became sin though He knew no sin, He went into the trenches and stepped in our place to do what we could not. Jesus acts as a great leader.
You see everything in life should point us to Jesus, though there are frustrating situations, when you face them as best you can ask the Lord, what is He trying to show us through this? I continue to learn to do this.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

1 Peter 3:8
Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;
Being Polite
Last evening I sent out a few jokes via text to a few of my contacts just to kind of brighten their day. One person responded sort of quickly and stated the answer. I was glad this person was able to figure out the joke, then I sent out another and this person responded again rather quickly with the answer. I responded with wow, are you good at "Dad" jokes? This person responded and said no but I used Google. After some time I asked this person why they felt the need to use Google. This person fired back and added a few digs. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of 1 Peter 3:8:
"Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;"
I always noticed something about my mom, mom tried to be nice to as many people as mom could. One time the neighbors had a kid and mom not knowing them bought gifts for them and gifted them to them. The neighbor responded with thank you, but can you please keep your dog from barking? Mom said OK, and walked away. Mom felt so hurt afterward, however, Mom did not respond.
In the verse for tonight Peter writes that being compassionate, loving, tenderhearted, and courteous is what we are commanded to do. The person who responded with some digs to me in the text message could be a sign of some underlying issues she may be facing. I wasn't trying to cause her any issues, I just wanted to know why she couldn't just pay a long.
As a Christian, I think it's important to keep ourselves in a state where we follow 1 Peter 3:8 as many people will tend to fire back at us when we are just asking questions or inquiring about something.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Romans 8:26
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Encouragement When We Do Not Know What To Do
Last night I arrived at a venue to do a paid speaking engagement, when I got there it was close to the start time, so I quickly set up and waited while talking with the Organizer. After about 25 minutes it was apparent that no one would show up. In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Romans 8:26:
"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."
When I was younger I can remember asking Mom for advice on things, when mom didn't know Mom would pray and tell me to pray or to talk with someone. It was always comforting for me to know that Mom was praying for me and was there.
Last night after no one showed up, I was thinking about how should I bring up the fee. I was thinking as I was speaking with the organizer that maybe there is a rule if no one shows up then I don't get paid. I wrestled with this in my mind and felt a little bad about this. But I thought well I'll just assume that there is an underlying rule that if no one shows up I do not get paid. I thanked the Organizer left got into my vehicle and started to drive, I felt bad, because I had made the effort of coming out, and all I wanted to know was if there was an underlying rule I needed to know, I didn't want to assume.
At that moment I felt led to not leave things as they were, and so I stopped and went back in and asked.
As Christians, we should always be aware of God's presence in our lives. In my case, I was a little shy to ask about the fee schedule and just assumed something, I felt led by the Lord to ask instead of just assuming. So I felt that I was encouraged to do something when I did not know what to do by the Lord.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.

Week 548
Galatians 6:2
2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Help Carry Burdens
If there is one thing I learned about myself it's that I very much enjoy helping people. So much so that I sought out helping others and joined a mentoring program this year so I could mentor others. Last evening I was explaining this to someone, and this person complimented me, and then I thought why am I like this? In tonight's verse, we come to the pages of Galatians 6:2:
"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ."
One time I was at a store with my mom and there was this older lady there my mom went up to her to say hi as mom thought mom knew her. It wasn't someone my mom knew, but from what I knew mom went up to the person to see if mom could help her with anything. When I look back at this and think of that fond memory I realize indirectly Mom was instilling in me a sense to help others. This is a Christian attitude, to not just look after ourselves but to see how we can help others.
When I think about why do I like helping people I think it's a Christian attitude that God has allowed to flourish. See when I needed assistance with something God always sent the right person to me. When I needed help with my resume as I tried to break into my field God sent the right person to me to help me. This person sat with me and worked on my resume with me, encouraged me, and uplifted me. Though the person did this, he was just the subject that God used, it all came wonderfully orchestrated by God.
As Christians one of the things we can do is help others, it doesn't cost a cent to be kind to people saying, hi, encouraging someone, and uplifting people. Starting with something that simple will have eternal rewards as we trust that God placed us in a position to help others. Help others, and I thank the Lord for using me.
Love you Mom, and I love you, Lord.

Week 549
Psalm 125:2
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people
both now and forevermore.
Remembering God Is In Control
It was a few years ago when I left my job that I had been with for seven years, the next day was Saturday and I felt so depressed. Well, today I reached out to a friend who was leaving his job and asked him how he felt, he mentioned he felt anxious. In tonight's verse, we come to Psalm 125:2:
2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people
both now and forevermore.
When I was younger my mom would see me, know when something was bothering me, pray for me, and ask if I was OK. When I left the previous company I was so down and felt I had no one to understand me and feel my pain. I called a few people and texted but no one understood me and knew what I was feeling, just mom would have. That experienced that I had, taught me things about God. God was allowing something in my life for His reason. Today I called my friend and was able to share this experience with him as he transitions to a new job.
As Christians, we should be mindful of the things we are facing and know that we may not understand why at that moment why are experiencing something, But God does. He protects us and is there with us He has not left. For me today I realize the experience of sadness I felt I could use that to encourage my friend in his current struggle.
As today is 9/11 we must remind ourselves that God is in control, no matter what.
Love you Mom and I love you, Lord.
